My 2nd Gen iPad is getting pretty snaggy - keeps falling over when asked to do anything beyond iTunes / simple browsing. Not bad since its 7 years old.

I want to get a replacement, particularly that I can run wireless/3G so I can use it as a mobile storefront / POS when doing events for my e-commerce business.

Considering a refurbished iPad mini but want to make sure I get the right spec - are Gen 2 still OK, or should I simply stump-up for Gen 4.  Also is 16Gb enough these days? Any advice appreciated.

16GB fine unless you're taking loads of photos or downloading lots of films. For browsing, email and long-haul iplayer 16GB should be fine (i.e. where the large TV files get autodeleted over time)

Dunno about Gen issues but presumably the Apple Refurb store only offers recent stuff that will run latest iOS. I have an iPad Mini stuck on iOS 9 but no idea what gen it is.

As for Apple's own refurbs I bought an iPad from there and there's no way you'd be able to tell it was a refurb.

I have a mini 2 4g 16g that was bought from apple as a refirb. I’ve been eyeing up a mini 4 for ages with a bigger HDD.

Is be looking at a 4 as mine can be a little slow. No issues with refirb, why buy new?

I’ve had a refurbished mini 2 for almost four years & it’s still fine for browsing, emailing & watching Plex / Netflix. For POS work, it should be fine. There’s a 32GB WiFi & cellular on the refurb. store for £289. If you want Touch ID (allowing Apple Pay on some apps/websites), a slightly better processor (same as iPhone6) & camera, then £399 gets you a refurb. mini 4 with 64GB. I’d suspect that both will be deemed too old / underpowered to get iOS 13.

I can also endorse the Argos and Hughes refurbished stores on eBay.  Our 1st gen iPad Mini was very much on its way out and just got a 6th gen 32GB iPad (not mini) for £230.

I would spend £320 on the latest 2018 iPad instead of an outdated mini

Battery will probably be shot on any 2nd gen iPad mini

Scuse my ignorance, but can't you plug in a usb drive to the ipad, or an external drive??
