Looking at buying a used car, private seller. Car is in near perfect condition and has been owned from new by a car enthusiast who has really looked after it.
Thing is, he wants 11k for it and the tax runs out end of Nov - so i tried to get 12 months put on it, his answer was an unshakable NO!!, so i tried for 6 months and he was equaly resistant - insisting that the car was worth every penny of the asking price (which is probably is). Feels a bit annoying that he will not budge at all.....cant imagine too many people are buying 3 year old used cars for 11k at the moment - but he is insistant?!?!?!?
there are plenty of other cars out there.
if you'll walk away over £100 then its not worth it.
What jambo said, its either worth it or not.
If he's priced it at a good price (which you've admitted he has, as you've said it's worth the £11k) why should he shift on it?
Maybe he is worried he will go to the trouble of taxing it and moting it, for you to chip him down further when you come to collect it 😉
If its an issue, walk
@willber - what's the book value / guide price for the car ?
Yes he's being a bit of a d1ck by not budging but if the car is worth the money then buy it. A 3yr car should be in very good condition by the way.
12 months road tax can be a lot more than £100 btw @jam bo
He's a private seller offering a car you like at a good price - if you want 'flaps and mats' treatment go to a dealer.
road tax could be £400, the 11K might just pay off his finance on the car??

Or pay off the finance and have enough to buy a different car. Exactly what I've done in the past. Had a few folk asking for money off "to buy original exhausts", "need to budget for different wheels, I don't like those", etc.
They walked away because I'm not funding their taste, and it went to a very happy buyer for the asking price.
Either it's worth it or it isn't, but don't automatically expect the buyer to shift on price.
The book price based on age and mileage is 10.8k - but this particular car is in very very good nic. I'm not gonna walk away over it but I was a bit surprised he wouldn't even consider taxing it. He believes he's got it priced cheap, but I think it's about right - buyer vs seller perspective, lol
