It's a 2006 VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.7 CDTi Deisel Estate. £2300.

Would you?

What are the pitfalls of buying a high mileage car like this?

Do you know the history? That many miles in 5 years will probably have been motorway miles, so not too much bother for a modern diesel I wouldn't have thought. So long as it has a full service history, that is?

My 03 Ibiza has got 165k on it & is still running fine. I'm currently doing about 32k miles/yr in it and it just (touch wood) keeps going. I do make sure it is regularly serviced though.

Things to look out for are things like the air-con compressor, does the air-con need a service/recharge? When were the brakes/pads last done? Is it still on it's original clutch, exhaust etc??
What state are the dampers in/suspension bushes?

pitfall is selling it on after you've used it might be difficult!
At higher mileage injectors can tend to wear leading to more smoke than usual from a diesel. More miles means more things like stonechips.

I also own a ibiza, 02 with 135k on it and tbh it has had a few problems but none to do with its mileage - more to do with age!
I think i would rather a 150k mile 06 car than a 85k 02 car as long as its had its been looked after:)

Nought wrong with high mileage.

I put 200k on a Vauxhaul Corsa 1.5TD and it didn't skip a beat - sadly the engine finally died from corrosion - most of the miles were winter miles on salty roads and the contents of the engine bay went Orange and rusted through all over the place..

Done 122k on my current Golf so far and the engine is still as good as new...

im with hora - screams TAXI, repmobile or hire wagon .....

id touch none of em

need to ask your self

how many miles are you going to do a year in it ?

are you gonna keep it till it dies ?

2300 - having a giraffe for a high milage disastra .... read up on 1.7 CDTI ecus - not sure if it affects the cars but there was a fair issue with them in combo vans !

this goes back to my basic car thread yesterday - if vauxhaul brought back that 1.5TD corsa with the isuzu engine exactly as it was in 1995 id buy one no questions asked! - the cdti is a different beast though 🙁

My petrol engined astra is giving me all sorts of grief at 80,000 miles. My advice is walk away and buy something japanese or with a Skoda badge on the front.

I'm a cynic but people shouldn't assume or be taken in with 'motorway miles'.

Unless someone lives in Newcastle and drives to work daily in London twice a day then its fair to assume that a great percentage of a cars mileage will be urban/mixed with alot of braking, potholes, gear changes, on/off, etc etc.

High mileage cars can be great but always buy on condition.
