My wife thinks it is…

Basically, when I buy something, particularly clothes, that really like I’ll almost always buy a 2nd in case it stop being made or something similar. We’re not talking rare things here either.

A current example is I have found what I consider the perfect pair of slippers. And I am now debating buying a second pair in case they stop being made.

See also various pairs of running shoes and toys for the dog.

Tell me I’m not alone in doing this…

My brother in law, when his favourite shoes got discontinued he scoured the internet and bought all the pairs he could find. Think it was somthing like 10+

It sort of make sense to me as it have hapoened more times to me that u finally find some shoes that fits me well and then they stop making them.

Oh yeah this is me. I have 4 identical Fox riding jerseys, I got one in a sale in about 2008 and liked it so much that every time I saw one I snapped it up. Sometimes I worry that people think I just have one jersey and I wear it day in day out, sometimes for several sweaty days in a row.

I've had 3 of the exact same camelbaks and I have at least one pair of Five Ten Freeriders stashed away unworn. Likewise at least 2 sets of kneepads I like (because I keep finding ones I like just as they're discontinued)

Oh and all my bikes have the exact same formula the one brakes from 2010.

With hindsight, I should have bought a second pair of FiveTen Sleuth slipons. You are wise, not weird.

Not just you, bought a new top for myself online, ordered 2 different sizes/colours to see what would fit, preferred colour. Sent the medium back but as soon as the moolah is back in my account I'm ordering that colour in large as I like the top.

Have also spent about 18 months looking for discontinued troo's I had. Finally got another pair a while back.

Only things that wear like bike parts. The wife does that with my clothes. If I like something I end up with another which is then boring.

I nearly bought 10 pairs of shoes a few years ago. Working on the principle that I go through a pair a year at work. It would be my count down to retirement. Fortunately I didn't as covid threw the wear rate right out of kilter.

I came here to post this as well!

I often do the “get a second one if reduced” thing ready for when a favourite dies. Didn’t with the 5ten slip ons I use every day… you can see my toes now.

I don't think it's odd - I do it too, typically for items of clothing that I know I'm going to use a lot (work footwear for example) that hit the sweet spots for function, comfort and durability. I'm about to start a new pair of boots for work that have been sat under the bed for 7 years (that's how long the previous pair lasted, with daily use through the winter).

Not odd at all. Can be difficult finding something that just fits right or feels right or the price is really good. I bought 3 x Nike Air Max 97 for £22 from a Nike outlet store about 15 years ago, onto my third pair now, wish I bought more.

Is it buying “more things”, or could it be buying the same or fewer things overall, but knowing what you like and sticking with it long term, rather than chasing fashion with regular purchases of a variety of things with the exact same function?

I do it with certain things...you are not mad.

Within reason, obviously!

Fragrances annoy me, my fave EDT ever is Prada amber por homme...but it's discontinued, I managed to track down a botttle but when this one runs out, I doubt I'll be able to get another one.

Not odd at all. I have two identical pairs of everyday shoes because they were on sale and the first pair were a perfect fit. No waste of resources because it doubles the time before replacement. Also means I always have a dry pair no matter the weather.

I have 4 identical saddles because it works for me and was discontinued so any time I saw one on eBay or elsewhere I bought it. I had 6 but have broken 2 over the years. A disadvantage of being 16 stone.

I have a second touring bike as an everyday bike which is my winter shopping and pub bike because I didn't want to risk parking my main tourer in Glasgow.

completely the opposite. You can’t wear 3 pairs of jeans at once can you, so they won’t wear out any faster. But you can save extra journeys or delivery miles by buying 3 pairs at a time rather than 1. However if you’re claiming you’re only going to have a single pair of jeans from now until the end of your days, that’s different, and I salute you. 😂

Assuming you actually do wear the spare when the original wears out, this is still buying the fewest things.

Possibly fewer than the alternative, given as if you're less happy with a replacement when the time comes, you're more likely to iterate faster.

My brother in law, when his favourite shoes got discontinued he scoured the internet and bought all the pairs he could find.

I've done this variously with Nike Janowski trainers, Diesel Krooley Jeans, Surface Hoodies and Specialized Alias Saddles. Basically discovered that they were a good fit and suited me when they were end of line / on the sale rails and haven't found anything better since (not in the sense that they're the only things I wear mind). A few saved searches on ebay and every now and then pick up old stock and barely worn stuff from now and then for peanuts.

My best one of these was plain black slazenger swimming shorts in the sports direct january sale, £5 a pair so bought 4 pairs.

I've worn them over lycras for all my running (marathons, ultras, assosciated training), on their own for all my swimming, and all day everyday on all my holidays for probably the last 15 years, and they are still as 'good' as new.

It's got to the point I'm willing them to wear out so I can finally replace them

I’ve got a few of a few things.

I’ve got multiple sets of bike tools on various bikes and bags. Three sets of multi-tools, mini pliers, missing links, tubeless kits, etc. One set in a rucksack, one in a waist pack, one set in a saddle bag.

Two pairs of Only What’s Necessary boots, because they are so good. Multiple pairs of Endura Zyme shorts, they fit perfectly, but I’m not sure how many I have. I buy them whenever they pop up on eBay.

But I am a weirdo. It’s part of being ASD.

One of my dad's early forays into online grocery shopping - there was a particular fancy make of fishcakes he likes. Sees the one he like clicks them to add them to basket. Sold in packs of four so he decides to get two pack - so types '2'. Then realise they're actually being sold as a special offer double pack - so theres actually 8 in a pack. So replaces the '2' with a '1'

Except, come delivery day loads of bags turn up.
the text box was too small to display two digits

21 eight-packs= 168 fishcakes.

Freezer was full of them - he got board of them after a while, I think most of them ended up being fed to the dog 🙂

I bought a rear door latch for my Transit, google is now trying to sell me boots catches for Polos, Fiestas, various Peugoets, etc, etc. The AI hasn't worked out that I might be interested in other bits for Transits, instead it has decided that I collect boot locks.

.

Anyway, to the OP. Yes, stocked up on a lot of bits in the Wiggle sale. Unfortunately, more often than not I can;t do this, by the time I've worked out that something lasts well in addition to it being comfortable and I would defineitely like that sort again, then it has lasted well enough that I can't get it any more, running shoes in particular

I don’t think I’ve ever done it, but I have on more than one occasion regretted not doing it so don’t think it is odd!

yeah, this is daft. Buy as few things as possible, might help save the planet.

I don’t think you’ve understood the premise of the behaviour.  Take shoes.  You find a style you really like a size that fits really well but it’s inevitable that they will wear our one day - maybe three years from now.  Of course the manufacturer will have moved on and you will not find the same product.  So the OP buys a second pair giving him perhaps six years wear from two purchases.  The alternative is to wait till the first dies then buy whatever is not in vogue - but that might mean a shoe that doesn’t fit as well, or in a rush to get a replacement isn’t as well made, or that is a style you don’t really like.  So perhaps you replace it after a year, but then again end up with a style and fit that don’t live up to the previous memory so buy another pair.  Now by year six you have three pairs and are less happy.  The OPs approach IS the one which is better for the environment unless you think it will decay in storage, he will die before it is useful or product technology will result in better products in the future (as a general rule - over time product lifetimes are eroded not increased).  Sometimes you need to think before you criticise others for their wasteful ways!

I've done this in the past with work shoes and kept one pair in the office for when I cycle and another pair at home in case I have to go somewhere straight from here. Also means they last twice as long.

Should have it with the Nike SB Portmore II shoes I bought in the sale a few years ago. Ended up being really comfortable but by the time I realised they had stopped making them

Didn’t Steve Jobs buy dozens of his favourite black top so he’d never run out?

I wish I’d bought loads of American Apparel grey henley tops before they went bust. I’d be quite happy wearing those every day for the rest of my life.

I’ve done this often, like with Uniqlo Japanese selvedge denim jeans - I don’t wear them often, the several pairs I have are already around ten or more years old, hardly show wear, and will almost certainly outlast me! I’ve got four pairs of Meindle Desert Fox army boots, which I bought at different times off eBay because they were so comfortable and were a fraction of the new price, so I rotated the wear, one pair I had resoled, but I’ve had them all so long now the midsoles have started disintegrating! <br />I can get them given a complete resole, at some cost, but still far cheaper than from new, which is about £170/pair - none cost me more than £40, two pairs were unworn. <br />I’ve got a lovely baggy Sherpa fleece hoodie that I bought from a surf shop in Bristol, it’s a Low Pressure ‘Storm Rider’, I’ve had it for at least twenty years, and the company no longer exists, I can’t even find them anywhere on the internet; I wish I’d bought another of a different colour.

I keep and wear things for decades, they wouldn’t have been so expensive when I bought them, so I’m more than getting value for money from them.

Here we have a pair of Puma Mostro trainers. Hideaous things aren’t they?

They are also the most comfortable item of footwear mankind has yet devised. Mine were olive green, so slightly more subtle

You haven’t been able to buy them for years. I bloody loved mine. I don’t think they ever left the house. I wore them as m until they fell apart. When they did, I almost shed a tear

Mrs Binners, bless her, saw my distress and tried to find me some replacements. Then she saw that second hand ones on eBay are £220+, so clearly people agree with me about the whole comfort thing

If I’d have known, I’d have bought enough pairs to see me out

This doesn’t work very well in warmer climates if there’s glues involved. If the shoes aren’t flexed the plastics and glues deteriorate then when you try to wear them they fall apart. It happened to me with a pair of Scarpa walking boots - took them out of the wardrobe after a couple of and they fell apart. Same with football boots I hadn’t worn for years. Went for a kick about and I had to put running shoes on after 15 mins as the soles cracked in half and fell off!

I thought it was just my bad luck but a friend that worked in an outdoor clothing shop said they often had people bringing back shoes that are stored saying they’ve only just worn them for the first time and they fell apart.

I bought a pair of 510 sleuths for £25, realised how comfy they are and bought a second pair. They have lasted me 7 years 😃

I've bought 3 pairs from Evans now they are on sale so I should be good for about 10 years.

I'm still tempted to get another pair...

I've got a pair of brand new Rapha road shoes stashed away somewhere.

I bought a pair and they were the best cycling shoes I'd ever had so a couple of years later when they discontinued them and put them on sale, I snapped up the last pair. However the first pair are still going strong although admittedly they're quite scuffed now.

Not odd to me.

Is it simply FOMO? Finding something you really like then being worried about finding a suitable replacement when it wears/runs out?

Kneepads and helmets are two bike things I've bought extras of for future use. Took a LOT of trialling to find ones that suit my apparently odd-shaped legs and bonce and I'd rather not go through that hassle again. But I've also done it with really comfy trainers I have.

I knew an outdoor instructor that had x5 of his favourite rucksacks, still in packets, stashed in the loft. He figured he was going to be working full time for the next 20 years or so, he would always need a rucksack and he had found the perfect one.

I have 4 identical Fox riding jerseys

ION logo tees: ridewear, street(man) wear, loungewear. They just fit me... Everytime I saw one on sale I purchased.. but all different colours. I have 8 - red, yellow, orange, light blue, black, purple, green, turquisy blue, dark blue. I think I've got enough now. Although, if I see one of the bronze coloured ones, I'm having that!
Also 3 Salomon (summer riding) jerseys, 3 Salomon base layers, 2 Pearl Izumi softshell trousers... They've stopped making all of them so I dun good!

Yep, do it all the time, especially with bike bits and outdoor kit. At 6'6" there as so many things that don't fit, when I know something works, I lock onto it.

I don't normally do it, but I found a nice pair of insulated Merrell walking shoes in TK Maxx for £40. I went back in a few weeks later and they still had a pair (but now further discounted to £20) so I bought them – two years later and the original pair have just been relegated to 'garden' shoes after taking a hammering in the Lakes over Christmas.

I’m the same but for different reasons. Live with spms so mobility is restricted and when I find something I can put on easily that doesn’t interfere with movement I buy a couple of them. About 5 years ago I found fox jogging bottoms that I can get on so I bought 3 pairs of them, same with tops as I found cheap £5 karrimor tops online at sports direct so my entire wardrobe now consists of 6 items, no more considering what to wear as it’s all the same.

Bought some Scarpa Treek GTX boots in the black friday sale - £150 instead of £250 - and just bought another pair from SportPursuit for £125. They fitted and broke in well so if I look after them, then with resoles they should see my hiking career out, maybe.

Bought one of those Ion Shelter 3L mtb jackets from SportPursuit for £74 after a recommendation on here, then noticed BikeInn selling a different colour for £58 recently, so bought one.

Had some nice Specialised mtb shoes (expert or similair - stiff carbon soles), then picked up another two new pairs for around £30 each from ebay, so that should see me out as well.

Bought two pairs of those Madison waterproof trousures from LeisureLakes after checking that they fit.

Got four pairs of Enacfire F1 headphones as I like the sound and battery life.
