With a headline like that I thought what did this hero amongst mere mortal men do? Maybe he put the pedal to the metal and jumped the bus over the bridge Speed style, or maybe he jumped out of the bus, under the bridge and held it up hulk style. Or maybe he picked all 11 children up in his arms and jumped out of the back doors of the moving bus just as it went over the edge. But no, I was wrong -
"I stopped and gestured to the bus behind me to move so I could reverse back to get my wheels off the bridge.
"I've been driving buses for about 17 years and that's where your training kicks in. You just do it."

wow, truly inspiring stuff.
Any other completely underwhelming stories?
Are bus drivers trained for the eventuality of a bridge disappearing in front of them or is he referring to the fact that he was aware that the bus had a reverse gear from his training?
He (the journo reporting?) makes it sounds like he took his driving test back in Nam.
Derek Trow. I just wanted to write his name.
I chortled when I read that. Really inspirational. Knowing to reverse.
Mind. Blown.
Let him have his 5 minutes of fame.
Being fair to him it's one of those things which is almost so unexpected you'd be forgiven for freezing up in a 'WTF' sense. The fact he did the wholly obvious and logical thing is, in itself, extraordinary.
TBH, the kids are from Tenbury, he'd have been better off to carry on.
