OK, not called the vet out as yet for the PTS, but it's on the horizon. I take it its the done thing to bury said animal in the garden?  If so, how deep does the hole need to be? He's a medium size greyhound.

Alternatively the vet should be able to take your dog away afterwards for cremation and you can collect the ashes at a later date.

Deep enough so that other animals don't did it up.  Spade deep for my two cats was deep enough.

You'll have to dig a pretty big hole for a greyhound.  Besides.. the ground could well be frozen solid..

When my lab was put down just before Christmas there was no way I could face digging a grave for him.  I opted to get him cremated and had the ashes back for £99.

2 foot was deep enough for our old deerhound. Similar size beasty. Fair hole, took about an hour in clay soil.

We are readying ourselves for similar with a cat. It would be a much smaller hole so no drama from that perspective but I live in a work owned house with development on the horizon and not sure I'd want to be around when she gets unearthed if the plans means we guessed wrong on location. Considering a stealth woodland location instead.

We have a friend who is a vet - she does not speak positively about the cremation route if you are especially sentimental - effectively bodies stored up until they have a freezer full and despatched en masse. The ashes you get back may or may not be from that 'burn' and even if they are would be a representation of a collection rather than your specific pooch. I guess it depends if that bothers you or not. Better than Fido reappearing spread across the lawn after an busy night of wildlife ativity.

^^ You can have your pet cremated on its own if you choose, or at least we could last year.

Our beloved dog was at her End Of Days. We made the decision to call the vet to the house, so that she would be in her own bed, in her own home and with her family when the time came. It was very dignified. If you can afford the extra £50 or so quid for the call out, I would recommend it without hesitation.

We then had her cremated in an individual cremation, and spread her ashes at a couple of her favourite places (the beach, the woods).

Also, seriously, check your soil type before you commit to burial; burying a cat in our heavy clay/rock soil was an absolute nightmare involving 3 hours of pick axes and spikes, sweat and stress.

We went with individual cremation both times. You do have to request, and pony up for, individual cremation/remains otherwise you get what are called "token" remains.

Lost both of ours last year. The hole was deep enough to not consider getting another dog again.

Had to bury our year old ragdoll cat last week after he was run over. About two foot down, placed him in a cardboard box then popped a small flagstone on top and then a foot of soil. I've popped a couple of flags on top to stop anything digging him up until we do something with the area when the weather is better.

We’ve had our Ferrets cremated and when the dogs go they’ll be cremated too.
