Caught this lovely man at 3:30 am behind the recycling bin. Told me he was hiding from someone. Not sure if its the van, car or house he was after. Still have the hole in the van from the lastt van entry attempt.
Can anybody tell if its a cheap burner phone or a device to extend the keyless fob in his hand.
Wife has an Evoque, keys are in a metal box in the kitchen.

How plausible is his story? Are your vehicles some way from the road and are there other places to hide before getting to the car/bins? What does the footage show, does he go straight behind the bin or does he have a wander round the cars first? Do you live on a main road or in the middle of nowhere?
Personally I’d be very suspicious.

He was trying to, for sure. But you caught him fortunately.
And this is the problem with CCTV, you now have a pic of a bloke which is of no use.
Unfortunately CCTV is only useful if they have something of yours in their hands and the Police recognise them.
We had a similar but different thing happen to us in the middle of the day. A lad came flying over our neighbours fence in to our back garden, announced that 3 gentleman were chasing him, to kill him nicely. To be fair you could see the fear in his eyes, or that could have just been the drugs he was on. He then left at high speed in to the next garden
I rang the Police who didn’t give a stuff

On the contrary. You now have a picture of a suspected car thief holding what is very likely to be a remote signal cloning thingy.
A police team investigating a series of high value car thefts in your area could potentially use your footage to tie a recognisable member of an organised crime gang into a series of events which could be of massive benefit. So report the incident and submit the footage.

on a lighter note, it looks a bit like he was trying to fob you off…….

Being optimistic, although this isn't actionable for them, the police may add it to their intelligence database, and flag it up to their car crime team. If they have such a thing. OTOH, they may just say 'meh, pass me the the donuts'.
he was trying to fob you off

That reminds me of when we heard a lad fence hopping, and saw the cops running after him. I was in the garden, so he diverted over the back before he got to my fence. Except he jumped straight into brambles ! Must have been desperate as he carried on through them and across the field.

He trots in between the van and car, dog goes mental, son checks his ring app, wakes me up, I go to the kitchen then run outside. So took a few minutes for me getting to him. Possibly true he was hiding, but my 12-year-old detective said he was probably hiding from people in another house he tried to steal from 🙂
Next door have a biggish drive but across the road only have front gardens, ring is on the porch and went past the porch to the side gate.

Wife reported online but not able to post any pictures, when the van was broken into and I had been to lazy to put the bike away we had video footage, offered a reward, and the bike was returned and had clear video of the person returning the who looked similar to theft video. Police didn't want either. Total waste of time.
Three days to reply from them when I found another of my stolen bikes on Gumtree. "Its no longer on gumtree"
