Seems to be a lot of stories in the press about people being fined under covid legislation for driving hundreds of miles to get a McDonald’s.
As amusing as these stories are; I can’t help feeling suspicious. I mean, if you got the munchies and drove 200 miles for a Big Mac and then got caught, would you admit that that was the reason for your journey? Expose yourself in the national press as an NHS hating fat knacker, hell no! You’d make up an excuse surely.
They were either up to something properly illegal and made up the McDonald’s story to hide the greater crime, or the police or the press are telling tall tales...
It pains me to say it, and 5 minutes on Twitter will prove it, but people are just that dumb
Not to mention the fact that there are always, always at least two police vehicles in every McDonald’s car park... 🤔
Surely nobody lives more than 20 miles from a McDonald's drive through?
Surely nobody lives more than 20 miles from a McDonald’s drive through?
Peebles?
And yet the cretins still manage to dump their macky-ds shit in the forestry carparks. I will put my hand up and admit I love the odd Macdonald's but cold after a 20mile drive.... Nah
Peebles has one at Gala or at Straiton. Both within 20 miles.
More to the point, when are Burger King bringing back the Rebel burger ???
The headline is hardly ever the same as the story.

Policenans discretion, if they decide it's not in the spirit of the rules they can fine you. It's not a black and white rule.
Covid has genuinely brought out the very best in most people.
The opposite in a minority unfortunately.
They are a minority though and its easy to forget that if you dirty your hands in social media.

The only time I see our local police is queuing at McDonalds or Greggs

Same reason you mostly see trade vehicles early morning at those places.
It's open and convenient if you work crap hours.
Their burgers are worse than the findus shite we used to get in the 80s. Madness going out yer way for one.
Can't help but think it's an excuse pulled out someone's arse on the spot to cover the real reason they're thaty far from home.
^^Punani.
If a guy will jet ski for hours to the Isle of Man... They will definitely go for a long drive for similar. To your average 20 something a leg over vs killing your gran?.... It's hammer time!
Interesting there was a group in the car though.
Dogging day out?
Dildo check of car would have sorted the objective out.
buying drugs more like
Sod knows whats so special about their burgers anyway, the damned things are tasteless.
I'd much rather make my own. Spend a bit time gathering the ingredients,, get the mincer set up(Hand cranked), the mixing bowl, chop this, chop that, mix this mix that.mince- do i want fine or coarse... Press out in the burger press and voila 😀
Cook.
Enjoy immensely.
buying drugs more like
That was my initial thought but presumably once pulled over on the Covid issue the Police would search the car, and I'm pretty sure you don't need to travel 100 miles to find a dealer.
Drugs run would be my guess.
Surely nobody lives more than 20 miles from a McDonald’s drive through?
I do, nearest one is 9.5 miles away in a different country, the next nearest is over 20 miles away.
I’m guessing though in this instance it’s motorway services etc and they are doing ANPR checks, people shouldn’t be driving big distances at the minute, and if you turn up at a McDonalds 200 miles from home you can’t really justify what essential travel you have been doing that requires being 200 miles away

Indeed. I can't believe the press are so gullible as to publish this. Whatever they were doing would be considered worse so take the hit for something legit, but not. If you'd been at an all night rave and got the munchies on the way there/home you'd just fess up the Maccy Ds and forget about the rave.
I know you wouldn't need to drive from MCR to Staffs to get either a burger or drugs.
If it happened at the weekend, I expect there was some kind of party involved.
Unless they had MTBs with them of course.
Depends how much drugs you are buying, and what type ( apparently )
Perhaps, or there's also the possibility that they were delivering.

Searching a car for drugs requires some grounds for suspicion. I doubt "they admitted a covid offence" is going to wash with the old bailey when they discover 2kg of coke in the boot.
and I’m pretty sure you don’t need to travel 100 miles to find a dealer.
you certainly don't, in fact I think I can confidently say that wherever you are live in the country you are probably able to get to a dealer as easily as, in not easier than a McD's.
They could be part of the supply chain, but if they are probably not a very smart part of it. Four young adults in a car will stand out like a sore thumb in covid times.
Personally I think its more likely they are just part of "the rules don't apply to me", "I'm young and no underlying conditions, covid won't kill me" brigade.
In fact given what people will spend on a big night out - in the current situation, a £100 fine is not a bad "entry fee" for socially mixing, especially if you don't get caught.
I’m guessing though in this instance it’s motorway services etc and they are doing ANPR checks, people shouldn’t be driving big distances at the minute,
I think you are overestimating the effort required and or the sophistication of ANPR for spotting average covid rule breakers. Of course some groups of young adults will all live in the same household, and might even work together and be making a legitimate journey...
Although £800 / 4 people - I thought fines were £100 (and double with repeat offences?). So not first offence? or possibly a road traffic offence too?
I know you wouldn’t need to drive from MCR to Staffs to get either a burger or drugs.
https://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/what-we-do/crime-threats/drug-trafficking/county-lines
'County Lines is where illegal drugs are transported from one area to another, often across police and local authority boundaries'

So 9.5 miles then ? <20
28 or 32 miles for me. Do I win? Yes, yes I do.
So 9.5 miles then ? <20
But clearly there are quite large parts of the country (including the bit chopped off the top) that are >20 miles from a McD's (and possibly further from a drive through)

Would "they told us they were travelling 200 miles to visit their favourite McDonald's" not count as reasonably suspicious?
It's also worth noting that slot of them got handed driving without insurance and licence type charges as well.
From this we can take they are the most bellendous of wallopers.
Driving 200 miles with no excuse was enough to search this bloke
If a guy will jet ski for hours to the Isle of Man…
Mate of mine who lives on the IoM tells me it was more likely a drugs delivery, and the cops were pretty sure he was dropped off a good way across by a fishing boat. The leg over excuse was just that, much like someone driving from Manchester to Uttoxeter for a Maccies. You can even get it delivered to your door in Manchester! (Maccies, Just Eat. Drugs, one of the blokes who gave you a lighter with his mobile number on).
Would “they told us they were travelling 200 miles to visit their favourite McDonald’s” not count as reasonably suspicious?
Of course not, it would be an outrageous breach of their civil liberties and a clear indication that we are heading towards a fascist/Stasi Police State.
Driving 200 miles with no excuse was enough to search this bloke
That falls under travelling for work surely?
The guy who used the excuse that he drove 100 miles to Devizes for a McDonald's...
...didn't know that Devizes hasn't got a McDonalds.
...or that his car hasn't got insurance.
Surely the standard excuse is that you're testing your eyes work before travelling with your entire family? never mind getting inventive with this McDonald's nonsense.
Amateurs......
Should have worn high viz vests. No one stops you if you are wearing a high viz vest 😉
But clearly there are quite large parts of the country (including the bit chopped off the top) that are >20 miles from a McD’s (and possibly further from a drive through)
is it a human right to be allowed to drive to Mcdonalds?
To some people it is.
If you mean this one the woman drove 100 miles to meet her sister and they had a MacDonalds.
BBC burger story

Whether you work crap hours or not, you can still rustle up some healthy, nutritious and tasty food yourself, if you really want to. People use McDs, Greggs, whatever because they want to, not because it's the only option.
Similar story locally. Police fined and sent back two separate vehicles at the local beach. One van with 5 blokes driving from London to N Devon to go surfing. Second incident Dad and Son driving from the Midlands to Devon to go fishing.
The local "story" for the surfing incident is the driver was over the limit and detained!!
