37 tonnes of Italian marble, two life-sized sculptures and a solar-powered jukebox.
Tasteful.
Blimey! That looks bigger than the caravan he must have lived in 😳
Can't say I'm keen on the flags, otherwise pft, people have been building silly monuments to dead people for a very very long time indeed.
Quite how that just turned up overnight though is impressive, it's Olympic grade fly tipping if ever I saw it.
37t of Italian marble. Sounds expensive. What did he do for a living again?
He was king of Sheffield. Whatever that means…
it’s Olympic grade fly tipping if ever I saw it.
Yup.
I view roadside memorials as fly tipping.
While I appreciate that there are some people who feel a desperate need to mark a death spot or set up a wee memorial, you would think that if the dead person really meant that much to them, they will never forget,so it shouldn't need a marker.
it’s Olympic grade fly tipping if ever I saw it.
I'm guessing that fly-tipping may well have been something he was familiar with
I wonder who the new king of Sheffield is.
yep. At least this is in a cemetery! Obviously against the rules, and will justifiably upset some people, can't help but marvel at the epic-ness of it though 😃I view roadside memorials as fly tipping.

Why bother with a graveyard? or a burial ground to scatter ashes? As the loved ones will always be remembered anyway?
As long as they take wrappers off flowers i don't see the issue as it will all just wilt away eventually anyway.
King of Sheffield?
What a joke.
Traveller and bare knuckle boxer; died in Spain.
That tells me everything.
It's tat central; it's unauthorised and an eyesore.
Demolish and scrap it.
Didn't anyone notice the monstrosity being built?
Well known and convicted serial scammer. They should scrap it and return the money to the pensioners whose life savings he defrauded them of.

I assumed this would be his background but the BBC is thin on details – where can I read more about this person?
Funeral involved a monster truck 😂

There are a few places round South Wales where the families have erected a full-on gravestone at the spot where they died. There was one on the mountain between Ebbw Vale and Llangattock that had a headstone for each person, solar lights, wind chimes and regularly replaced flowers and helium balloons. Took over a whole layby. The family kicked up a massive fuss when the council asked them to remove it after a few weeks, it was eventually bulldozed. What was worse was how the notes attache to the flowers said how the driver was a loving individual who never hurt anyone and was the best son/dad ever. Pity then that the accident happened with an overloaded car while the driver was drunk.
A few flowers for a fortnight or so is fine, anything else is over the top IMO.
A guy died round this way a couple of years ago - pissed up, fell in the river. So friends took it on themselves to build a patio with flowerbeds on the side of the river and its decorated with countless football shirts, plaques, endless flowers. Total eyesore.
EDIT: This. Doesn't quite do it justice - from afar , especially now its all 2 years old, it looks a complete mess.

This.
I'm wondering how much all his nieces and nephews would need to chip in for them to cover the cost of that. £100 each... Would £400,000 cover the cost of it?

You need to brush up on your maths (or typing) 😉
can’t help but marvel at the
epic-ness
ugliness of it though
FTFY
I've been hearing about this all week as I work with a few people who live in the area including someone who knows the local florist. I've heard some very juicy details but I can't verify any of it.

Don't assume that all the suppliers have been paid, including the supplier of the £12,000 gold casket he's buried in.

Ah yes sorry! My mistake he only had 400 nieces and nephews not 4000 😀

This.
I even don't like the memorial bench with 'This was Edna's favourite spot, luv from Patsy' plaque on it.
When I go toes up, mrs_oab and the kids can plant a tree up a peaceful glen somewhere and leave no other trace. Who will care about me a few years later? They will have a couple of photo's and a memory, that is enough already.

I think it's quite nice to provide something useful though. I've already issued instructions in my will for the Binners Memorial Dog Poo Bin to be placed in the local park after my death
One of the most important poets of the 18th century and it's taken 250 years to put up a memorial. Disgraceful.

I'm sure he was relieved about it. Post Christmas credit card bill must've been a bloody nightmare as it was!

Yes, hopefully the jukebox contains non-stop readings from Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegoric Subjects

I assume you don't consider used to be on par with useful?
he Binners Memorial Dog Poo Bin
There's a karmic element to this that I like; after all the shite he spouted in life, in death he will be forever given it by others 🙂
Binners Memorial Dog Poo Bin
In Remembrance of Things Passed
Not a blue plaque on your local Greggs binners?
I'd imagine when Binners pops it the local Greggs will go bust.
Quite how that just turned up overnight though is impressive, it’s Olympic grade fly tipping if ever I saw it.
Could have made a great memorial from a load of old washing machines , car batteries and bike frames .
A few nicely pruned trees and a nice bit of tarmac out the front and it would have been a fitting monument 😉
I think you’ll find the marble will have been just left over from a job they were doing for the council…
I assumed this would be his background but the BBC is thin on details – where can I read more about this person?
Same name, age, locale so reasonable to assume this is the scumbag referred to https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/sheffield-rogue-trader-scammed-elderly-couple-out-thousands-pounds-296377
Probably not many details on Companies House
There was a recent unexpected death of a local and they obviously decided to scatter his ashes in a wee burn that cascades magnificently off a cliff into the sea. Trouble was, most of his ashes appear to be quite heavy and now lie, glistening white in a little piles at the bottom of a little pool at the top of the cliff, right next to the footpath.
This popped up in my youtube suggestions.
some people who feel a desperate need to mark a death spot or set up a wee memorial
What if someone does in hospital, do they put flowers by the bed?
A guy died round this way a couple of years ago – pissed up, fell in the river. So friends took it on themselves to build a patio with flowerbeds on the side of the river and its decorated with countless football shirts, plaques, endless flowers. Total eyesore
This is down the road from me. The unfortunate aspect of the memorial is that the embankment is covered in Japanese knotweed that was running rampant through the flower beds last time I was down there
Some rather interesting jibes made on this thread about a protected minority.....
That’s no more gaudy or vulgar than, let’s say, the Albert Memorial
What did he do for a living again?
It's strange that these things get erected to remember people who generally are not nice people. Where I live, on the local playing field there is a block of granite, erected to remember a right piece of S**t.
That’s no more gaudy or vulgar than, let’s say, the Albert Memorial
And that has it's own jukebox next door that plays annoying patriotic music on a regular basis.
That’s no more gaudy or vulgar than, let’s say, the Albert Memorial
Taj Mahal?
Great Pyramid?
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus?
Marble quarry and cutting vid up there 👆 is mint. Mad skills on the transport of the block along the levels.
Wow. I think it's the addition of the flags that gives it the air of dignity that it otherwise lacks
It’s strange that these things get erected to remember people who generally are not nice people.
Colston, Rhodes blah blah
That the relatives think it's a good idea when the bloke was a scumbag is mind boggling.

Or this one. Allegedly the second biggest monument to a dead wife in the world.

Rather more conspicuous than a patio isn't it?

I assume there's also an element of "Remember him. Remember us. Remember we're still here. See that memorial that everyone finds horrible? See how it's still here? See how the council/police are powerless to remove it?"
Never mind gaudy, it feels sinister to me.
If he really was as much of a scumbag as has been inferred, the continued intimidation of the community he victimised in life can't be ignored as a factor in constructing this monstrosity.
Have to feel sorry for anyone who's recently buried someone there and is trying to grieve in dignity with that circus going on.
It isn't inferred he was a scumbag - he definitively was a scumbag.
If the fly-tipped monstrosity is removed the chavs will be mightily pissed-off...disrespecting our way of life and other outpourings of shit; media interviews with 'still grieving widow and children' - salt of the earth, great family man, would do anything to help, wouldn't hurt anyone etc etc
So now the widow is threatening riots if any attempt is made to remove it.
