My empolyers (large multi national) have 'harmonised' different parts of the UK company in terms of lunch allowance. Obviously they went with cutting rather than giving other parts a non receipted lunch allowance. Have worked for them for 8 years and never had a problem, its not in my contract so have I lost it for good? Presumably yes, it just seems to be a non stop removal of benefits...sigh.

If its not contractural they can do what they want. I assume this was for eating when away from your normal workplace?

I'd be happy that I'd benefited from it for so long rather than be unhappy that it has understandably been withdrawn.

No it was paid for each day of work regardless of location, claimed through monthly expense return. Remote workforce so we all work from home/customer sites etc.

This is the recent our country's services are going to the dogs, all this tax avoidance. 😉

If you're away from your regular place of work they should pay.

If you're at home, make yourself a sandwich

I have a lunch allowance, and a housing allowance, even a bike allowance. It’s all lumped into one payment that some people refer to as a ‘salary’.

Not sure it will catch on...

No, it's being phased out slowly but surely.

If you’re away from your regular place of work they should pay.

Or take a packed lunch as we're expected to do.

Only if in hotel overnight do we get following day lunch allowance.

Well on the bright side, at least you won't have to pay tax on that benefit anymore.

I bought Greggs doughnuts for everyone in the office yesterday.
Is this tax deductible and should my colleagues be paying Benefit in Kind?

I get a mobile worker payment (I think its a tax adjustment to cover the tax element of your Sainsburys meal deal). However its only paid to engineers who are mobile workers, home workers and office staff don't get it.

We did lose several benefits as the company offered a one time cash payment in lieu of the allowance. Of course the office staff were included in the vote and gladly took the cash offer as they did not qualify for the allowances claimed by the engineers, this meant we lost some valuable benefits!

No but you might be liable for their obesity in the future.

I used to work for a London based subsidiary of a German Company. everyone got the old LV, Luncheon Vouchers as part of your salary, I think it the rate was £1 per days worth, so you'd get something like £20 odd pounds worth every month. I think this used to be a London thing? Being home based in the North of England, I struggled to find anywhere that would accept them. Only place that would accept them was the local Sainsbury's, so I used to save up a couple of months worth of £1 and spend them on a weekly shop.

I used to revel in the joy and admiration I received from my fellow shoppers standing in a lengthy queue behind me on a Friday night as the poor cashier had to scan the bar codes of each and every £1 denomination LV's individually. I came close to a lynching a few times!

Sadly i don't get LV's anymore, the bullies stole those as well. I've still got a few loose ones littered around the house. I've not been back to Sainsbury's either since

yes ago worked for a major petrochemical company. We had a FREE canteen. Then overnight the money grabbing bastards made us pay £1 for lunch.

its not in my contract so have I lost it for good?

Yeah, take some comfort in how long you got away with it.

The 'perks' I've had in the past! Lunch allowance, clothing allowance! entertainment expenses, over-night allowance (yep, they'd give us £15 a night for 'newspapers and incidental expenses' this, of course, didn't include the few drinks you could put on expenses and the usually nice hotel room with all meals.

Plus the boring stuff like super cheap mortgages and loans and that old favourite the final salary pension.

I miss the 2000s

I believe that if you have received the payment for 8 years, then that is “contract in practise” So you do actually have a basis in law to fight its removal, even if it isn’t written into your contract. Wether it is worth rocking the boat is a different matter.

IANAL

That's not practical if you're staying at a hotel overnight.

I've only ever received meal allowances when working away from my base office as a reasonable expense within normal T&S policy.

A free meal just for turning up at the office seems very generous IMO, and given it wasn't in your contract to start with I don't think you have much of a case, it doesn't sound like "harmonisation" so much as changing a policy that's allowed employees to take the piss for several years...

We only get subsistence allowances for meals if away from home for work for more than 24hours, and claims can't include alcohol (not that that's a worry for me).

We get a lunch allowance for our heavily subsidised canteen which covers either soup and main or main and pud. I work from home and miss this so essentially take a pay cut as it's part of our 'total reward'.

We have a free canteen at work, staffed by a couple of good chefs. We get a great choice at breakfast (toast, beans, scrambled eggs, porridge, cereals). Lunch is a full salad bar, different main every day, soup. Then there's cakes in the afternoon. All prepared on the premises, hoping to get the kitchen garden up and running soon. Chefs do that on a budget of less than £1.50 per person per day. It's frickin amazing, more businesses should do it.
