Hive mind advise please!!

We’ve recently moved house and have discovered that when it’s windy we have very loud flapping roof felt in the loft.

I’ve been up and had a look, it just is loose by the look of it. Not in any specific area, across the whole roof.

But I don’t know how it should look! Should there be battens? Should it be glued down?

House is stone built with pan tile roof, built mid 00’s.

What would be the potential solutions? Battens or perhaps fixing insulation boards to hold it all in place?

Thanks in advance!

You have felt flapping inside the loft?? first question is why is it windy inside the loft?

Felt is usually laid over sarking(boards) so you wouldn't see it from the inside, or the outside.

That’s interesting. It’s definitely a black membrane, so assuming it’s felt but could be something else!

In Scotland, not so much south of the border. The felt lies directly on the rafters, held in place by battens laid perpendicular, which the tiles are fixed to. You'll see the felt in the loft but it shouldn't be loose as such, it should be pulled taught when it's fitted. There might be gaps where the rolls overlap, and you'll get airflow into the loft space but it shouldn't flap about. Is it torn/damaged? There might not be much you can do - either duct tape the flappy bits or strip the roof completely and relay new felt - you probably don't want to do the latter!

You could try fitting some felt lap vents. It would take up some slack and improve ventilation.

@sing1etrack that sounds likely. It looks to have sagged a little, looks like it’s the ends which are flapping rather than ripping.

Needs more investigation. I’ll get up and maybe get someone in to have a look. Confirms my suspicions it’s not right, certainly! Thank you!

Does it leak?

No, don't touch.

Yes, call roofer.

...IANA builder or roofer.
