Ok. Anyone got an idea what this is? Another hoverfly? It was about the same size as a bumblebee.

I thought hoverfly, but never seen that one that big. Needed to get something in shot for scale.

Hover flies vary quite a lot in size, the bigger ones do look more like bees.
Oddly, never seen one before and seen 2 today. The fact they were 10 miles apart gives me hope they were not the same one.

Looks a lot like a [url= http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/volucella-zonaria ]Hornet mimicking hoverfly[/url] to me. More common in the south of the UK (so I'll assume that's where you're based!). Always amazed at how meaty some hover flies can be!
