Anyone got experience of cheaper smar****ches that aren’t rubbish?
Son wants to splash his meagre budget on a smar****ch and is looking at the Realme and Amazfit offerings. I’m suggesting he saves more but … well.
- Realme watch (not S model)
- Amazfit GTS4 mini
- Amazfit BIP3 pro
Any other good ones around at that price point?
(I have tried to find out what functions he wants but he’s not being very specific beyond wanting a black one and a touch screen. He does use Strava but no other social media)
Got my youngest an Amazfit Band 5, that was to replace her old Garmin Vivofit Jnr, I kind of fancied getting her the Neo for it's Casio like looks but it wasn't for me. She decided against the Bip as she thought it would be a bit too bulky, I was more than happy to get her the cheaper option, the display is kinda dinky, but she likes it...
Her sister and mum each have a Fitbit Versa2 which seem OK, they like them for the Apple-ish looks, and being an older model now can be had cheap, they do seem to struggle sometimes with updating info and even matching the time (I'm less impressed)...
Amazfit seem to have some good, affordable offerings that you wouldn't get too animated about when a child (inevitably) breaks them...
My wife bought me an Amazon Apple Watchalike to use for work. I think they’re about £35 ish.
Does what I want, basic messages, step count, movement alerts, music control.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it’s resilience. I’d happily replace with the same if it went tits up.
Can you put a custom face on any of these watches...your own graphics if you like?
Have a look at CEX for used watches. They come with a manufacturer's 2 year guarantee.
Does this mean Smart as in GPS?
My 13yr old goes out running and takes a phone with him to record strava.
He did have a fitbit kids watch at one point but it sits in a draw unused because quite rightly why does a kid need to be bothered about how many steps they do.
I thought anything with GPS was in the £100's? Rather than £10's ?
My lad bought a huawei (sp) one for about £50 or something a few years ago and it was great. Band style like the garmins, had GPS as well, so good for outdoor running and cycling. No idea if you can still get them, or if people are comfortable with them and there chinese spying overlords!
App was a bit clunky but the watch worked great.
Edit: seem the GPS enabled ones have gone up in price somewhat...
I've seen deals on Forerunner 55's that get you close to Amazft GTS territory. Not touch screen tho'
i bought a used Fenix 5 off eBay a year ago for £100.
Battery life and functions are great.
My previous Vivoactive3 battery ended up being terrible, and the Fenix has more functionality
Garmin 45s (Something like that, basically the women's version as it is slightly smaller). Both our 13 and 10 yr olds have had the same watch for a couple of years now and they still work, can record walks, rides, steps etc and get notifications.
Is £139 too much over? And is grey acceptable?

Ok not cheap but given the boy and Mrs D are both fully into the ecosystem we got him an Apple Watch SE 2022 simply because we knew exactly what we were getting, it'll do everything he wants and work seamlessly with his iPhone.
I love Garmin but for what he wants to do with a watch AW was a no brainer
12 year old ngkgirl loves her Poco Watch, £60 but often on offer or cheap still sealed on eBay.
