Budget app?

I'm after a budget app that either syncs up with my existing bank account or one where I have to enter spends manually. I'd like to be able to categorise them as I choose and actually write next to it what the spend was for. It's all very well my account showing 'paypal' but jigger me if two weeks later I can remember what it was for. All in an effort to see where most money is going so next time I'm tempted by cake I can think to myself 'I spent £50 on cake last month!'

Watcha got? Be handy if I can install it on the whole apple ios offering, macbook and iphone/ipad but not compulsory.

I'd be surprised if any banking app allowed a third party app to access it to sync up!

Absolutely do not want anything syncing to my bank. I have used this for years after trying many apps.
Works in a browser on laptop and mobile.

@simon_g I've just been looking at moneydashboard but I'm not sure it's possible to amend what the spend was for. Again it's all very well saying 'paypal' but I want to be able to put 'bike jersey' etc. instead.

NatWest app keeps asking me to permit 3rd party access but no way I d authorise.

I do old School accounts, just write them all down. Works for me and a small business.

Just do it as I go along, then add up every so often.

For something like this:

rename changes that "PAYPAL PAYMENT" bit.

So I can change that to what it is (as well as the category), and it shows like this:

I think YNAB - "you need a budget" is a recommended app, but don't use it myself.

I just use google sheets and a pivot table myself... Download transactions as a csv and using a look up table the transactions get into a standardised "spend type". For example;

petrol,

car insurance,

mortgage,

groceries,

eat / drink out,

Wiggle

and so on.

Basically every transaction should have a standard label applied to it which does takes a bit of tweaking your lookups.

These then get further categorised into the following (from memory) pivot table rows;

"Household running"

"Groceries"

"Savings"

"Fixed monthly contracts"

"Discretionary spending"

The end result is downloading the transactions and uploading to google sheets to be organised takes a few minutes a month and provides a concise overview table with 5-8 rows of where my income has gone each month. If I want more information, it is simple to expand the category to see the finer detail of what constitutes the spend.

An added benefit is if a category has increased - a good example is when a contract has come to and end (virgin media, looking at you!) and the DD has been increased, it is very obvious it has happened and can do something about it.

GolfChik,

MoneyDashboard will do what you want. From the product pitch I listened to you can set custom categories and even split stuff between categories (e.g. £30 of that Paypal was for "clothes" but £20 was for "bike parts")

Absolutely do not want anything syncing to my bank

To be honest I'd not be that keen either, although we've used bank links with business accounting for years and I've nothing specific to hide.  It just feels to me that my bank details are not for other people to aggregate, monetise and up-sell to me with.  That said, I'm probably losing out on some money saving advice from my "none of your business" attitude.  I've met some of the Money Dashboard founders/leadership and actually there's nothing that immediately rings alarm bells there for me.

I don't know why I would care that a third party has access to my data if I get a useful service back from them.  My bank already has access to (and has used that data to try and upsell me stuff) and frankly I have more faith in Money Dashboard than I do in RBS to be have ethically!

I've used YNAB before but the modern one with apps etc is $99 a year. It's also a model of entering stuff manually as you spend it then reconciling it all later. I just use moneydashboard to help me remember what transaction is what, and we don't have to be super strict on budgets but it gives a good idea of how we're doing through the month and if something big needs putting off to next month.

I’d be surprised if any banking app allowed a third party app to access it to sync up!

This, Open Banking, is quite literally what I do (at least from the bank side)

There are more and more companies making apps that do this sort of thing. Some to try are:

Moneyhub
Emma
Lumio

I don’t know why I would care that a third party has access to my data if I get a useful service back from them.

Worth remembering that they only have access if you've explicitly given it to them, it only lasts 90 days after which they have to ask you if you're happy to carry on and if you're not, the access is removed and that they're all FCA regulated.

I’ve just been looking at moneydashboard but I’m not sure it’s possible to amend what the spend was for. Again it’s all very well saying ‘paypal’ but I want to be able to put ‘bike jersey’ etc. instead.

Moneyhub lets you do this, IIRC
