i'm planning to spray my old VW, high build filler then paint, and am looking for a spray gun that will be suitable to use with a regular diy compressor.

i'm not after a pro gun, cheap as possible really, but would like something that will be decent enough if that makes sense but not cheap rubbish that will make the job harder than it needs to be especially as a first time job on this scale.

anyone have any thoughts?

If you go air you need a moisture trap as well.  Plus clean hoses if you've ever used an oiler with your other air tools.  Most DIY compressors don't have a big enough reservoir for continuous spraying so you'll get lots of dry edges so spray a panel at time and let the compressor cool down before starting again.

I don know some people who just buy cheap guns then throw them away rather than waste time cleaning them and they get good results.

The difference between an el-cheapo gun and even a low-end pro gun is enormous.

I've got a low-end Devilbiss which was £150 or so, you don't state a budget but that has paid for itself many times over. I wasted hours re-sanding and re-spraying after achieving a sub-standard finish with my old cheap 'n nasty gun.

Devilbiss FLG5 is a "good" "budget" gun.

Gav, I have a Devilbiss suction gun in the shed. I've not used it in a while. I don't know what needle and jet combination it has. I'll have a look later and see what they are.

I found my gun in the shed, it’s a Devilbiss JGA. From what I remember from the restoration work I did on my cars years ago, there were combinations of cap and needles that were best suited to different jobs.

Mine could probably do with a new seal between the cup and gun and a new suction filter

Needle JGA-402-D-EX

Cap No.30

Gun JGA-502-1

Iwata AZ3 HTE2

After doing some research recently with a similar criteria to yourself I opted for the above. Aint used it yet but I got it for around £80 on ebay, Got it with the 1.8mm nozzle to shoot epoxy primer initially.

I've used this for varnishing wood. Works well, not too expensive and has weathered my poor care. Results were good.
