Hey guys

Off on a family break to Bude for a few days this week

Anyone know the area and can recommend any good activities or sights to visit, especially for young kids?

Looks like we may have a bit of wet weather to contend with!

Food options may be limited given the time of year and impending lockdown doom but anywhere that does a good coffee or grub would be handy too!

Summerleaze beach is great for the kids when the tide is out, rock pools to explore and clamber over.

Our kids really enjoyed The Hidden Valley

There are some nice cliff top walks to the north of Bude, between Sandymouth, Northcut etc. but they are a bit hilly.

Food wise the Olive Tree by the canal is nice.

We are well served with some great pubs in the area, although worth checking as a few have decided to have a bit of a break due to staff & reduced customers about.
Preston Gate Inn - great pub grub.
Old Wainhouse Inn. - more traditional pub grub
Barneys - burgers & dogs
Potters - amazing restaurant food.
Widemouth Manor. Good food, service & views.
Life’s a Beach. Nice seafood, views & breakfast.
Bay Leaf Indian - best of town Indians.
And Chungs. Chinese takeaway from mid 80’s
North Coast Wine. Lovely little bar.
Rebel Cinema - nice little, independent cinema.
Walk around Upper Tamer Lake.

Avoid the Bay View Inn. Ok for a sunset pint, but shocking food & service.

Crackington and millook if you like a bit of geology with your beaches.

If the weather gets too bad the Eden project is about an hours drive from Bude.

Contrary to Jezzasnr I found the bay view Inn alright, albeit 7 years ago. The sticky Toffee Pudding was massive!

Ah the bay view inn. My lad when he was about 9 months old managed to cover my wife pretty much head to toe in vomit in the middle of a packed Sunday lunch service. Not been back since…

Rosie’s at Summerleaze: good food for grownups and kids, and a great beach to explore. They do a wicked hot chocolate, go and snuggle up by the woodburner.

Check out their facebook page you’ll get a flyer for free parking.

Word of warning - don’t bother with fish and chip shops in Bude, all awful IME unless things have changed in the last couple of years.

And if you want the best traditional pastie in Bude (in fact they are World class) it’s Tasty Pasties up the top of town. No contest.

Avoid the Bay View Inn.

Was recommended on here pre-covid and they did great mussels, went back post-covid and they had a limited menu and were pretty poor. Sunday lunch at Widemouth manor was pretty poor too.

Didn't rate any of the pasties, all much of a muchness, and I love a pasty.

+1 for Life's a beach and the we always enjoyed food from the Olive tree

Bay View Inn always been good for us.
Fish n chips is hit n miss. Worth driving up the road to Kilkhampton.
Rosie’s, Life’s a Beach are fab, as is Chicken n Rum shack.

We always just walk SW coast path or drive down toward Padstow if the weather is poo!
