Signed up for BT (attracted by the free sport stuff for the rugby).
Engineers coming on Friday to install it, I didn't want to pay the extra £10/month to rent a hard drive and jnr likes Mr tumble so if like to record it. Is it possible to buy a DVR and record from the youview? Don't want to ask BT as they'll just tell me to get their kit so hoping for experiences and recommendations?
Thanks
I have one of the boxes (no BT subscription) and it works fine as a freeview recorder and catch-up (iplayer, all4, etc) box.
Not sure how it works for the BT sport etc channels if you're subscribed but don't have a box associated with it.
We got the box for £5 a month. Need to check if we are still paying that actually as I was annoyed we couldnt actually get any of the online channels (BT sport we were paying for) as they realised after signing us up we didnt have a fast enough line. 1 years worth of £5 was a god price for the box though, as long as we are still not paying it.
I don't know about BT but my parents used a DVR to record from their Sky very successfully. They've now got Sky + so it doesn't really get used as a DVR much any more, but it worked fine for a year or two.
Ah thanks gents. Some more googling will have to be done. 😀
I bought one of the BT Youview DVR boxes (used) off Ebay recently for about £70.
Bung a Wifi dongle thing in the back and the full YouView capability is there including remote recording schedule via the app.
From what I've read you are better of using powerline adapters rather than WiFi, if you can't get an ethernet cable there.

Wifi works fine for me, the router is in the same room as the TV/Freeview box though.
