Got a new BT Smart Hub and have connected a portable drive to the USB socket.

It shows on the router page but I cannot see it on my PC. Doesn't show on the network and I can't map it.

I've tried google, which seems to use some command line instructions to map it, but they don't work for me.

I thought you needed to plug it in and it would show?

I thought (probably incorrectly) that the USB port was for adding a 4G modem rather than network storage.

Isnt that for printer sharing, not for storage sharing?

I have a USB key plugged into my Smart Hub 2 and use it as a local Sonos library.

The default share is \\192.168.1.254\usb1 (assuming default IP address).

Is it a USB key or a HDD? The latter may require too much power possibly. Also, how is it formatted?

I can't remember what, if anything, I had to do to get it working but there are a few suggestions on this thread - the SMB one rings a bell.

@frogstomp - thanks for that, but I tried it and it still hasn't worked.

I will try a USB stick and see if its a power issue.

Seems to be a power issue, a 16GB USB stick works fine.

16GB is larger enough for the documents I want to back up.

What you need there is OneDrive / Google Drive / whatever the Apple one is called.

Local backups are good, fast and convenient. But no use if there's a burglary or a fire, or the storage just curls up its toes one day. Having both would be best.

I've received a new smart hub. Do you just plug the new one in or do you have to do any setup? Its been so many years since I've logged onto the hub I wont be able to remember my password.

I have One Drive, the USB options is just the belt and braces. If your data isn't in 3 places, it's not backed up thing.

Just plugged it in.
