Why do they need to send me a new router, the one I have is less that 2 yrs old, can I not just take it with me?
and yes I have tried asking BT... blood from stone or wifi from a tree would be easier than getting answers from them.
Your existing one will be preconfigured with some log in details which will presumbaly not be valid in the new location. They probably feel it's more cost effective to send a new one than spend time telling you how to re-configure (if you can) the old one. Or you might be changing from ADSL to fibre?
What's wrong with a new, improved router?
wow. i'm not up to date with this stuff but i can't imagine you'd actually need a different router REALLY.
i imagine that as part of the 'house move' process, at their end someone will cancel your account and set up a new account.
then it automatically generates a new username and password for the 'new account', and a router will be auto-configged with those details.
if you're handy you may well be able to log in to the router and change the details yourself. But if you're a phone jockey in a call centre it's easier just to tell people to wait for the new router...
Don't see that there's any reason at all.
I have a Home Hub 5 that I bought on Ebay to use with my old ISP, switched to BT recently and kept using the old Home Hub, just putting in my new account details. Worked fine. So not only is my router not from my house, it wasn't even mine.
Just say thanks very much and sell the new on on Ebay.
They're idiots.
Next question?
@suburban - I have the same router already and I just don't like the junk that it creates of always getting a new one.
The house move stuff is all done online and it adds in a new router and £6 delivery, automatically.
I will take the new one, mine is crap.
I suppose it could just be policy to send a new router with a new connection, to avoid potential compatibility issues with old kit.
In that case @Matt since we will be neighbours soon, delivery to you will be a mere £15 and a pint at the Tappit Hen! 😆
Weird. I moved recently and asked BT what to do. They set everything up, including the email that said that as I already had a new router all I needed to do was plug it in on a set date. I plugged it in the day before and the internet was already on.
Excellent service from BT, I've always found them more than helpful.
As I say it's weird how some people get crap service and others get excellent service, makes me wonder whether it's the individual operator or customer that's the problem.
We've just moved with BT.
You'd think this would mean I have all the answers, but it's been like pulling hens teeth from a tree let alone Wi-Fi!
In the flat we had FTTC, which meant an engineer had to come out and install the openreach VDSL socket in place of the old phone socket. Having now had three different answers from 3 different BT call centres we've been told to go out and buy a ADSL filter from maplins.
I've now no idea whether this means everything will work, are we no longer getting fiber, maybe we are and it won't work and it'll be a waste of £10, who knows...............

Deal!
Text on its way - where you moving to?
Unplug BT router from old house.
Plug in in new house.
Use.
Just done it and it works fine - took a day or two of reboots to settle it down but pretty much good as gold now.
Do you have a home hub 4 or 5? The 5 is fairly new, so if you have the 4 that's why they're giving you a new one.
