Phone line comes down the front of our house, down the passage way, round the corner, into the kitchen. It then has an extension for the phone and internet into the lounge.

conservative estimate of 50ft of extra cable!

ideally i would like it to enter the house via the window frame at the front of the house, plus the router and phone in directly. Save mess, extra cable and faff!

How much would this cost? Would i need BT? or is it an easy DIY job like wiring a plug?

You are not allowed to do it yourself, but its not rocket science.  I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble or a telephone engineer caring.  There is a slim chance that if there was a fault at a later date and the engineer could tell it was a DIY bodge, he may charge to put it right.

P.S Its bad practise to come through the window frame, and you have an unsightly wire across the woodwork (or you put the socket there, but then its susceptible to condensation etc)  Much better to drill through the wall from inside and wack the socket directly over the entry point.  Leave a drip loop outside.

Should be BT Openreach - arranged by your phone provider for about £125. Whilst you could it yourself it's strictly their equipment and if you screw it up they'll make you pay.

Ive had openreach fit me 2 new ones now, both no charge with a new contract for phone and bb etc.

Now its no longer bt, just openreach this may not be as easy, last one was just before handover last year.

And that won't be doing your Internet much good. You want the router/modem as close to the master socket as possible to get the best possible signal from the exchange or cabinet. Preferably with a master socket with separate phone & DSL sockets, rather than filters on extensions etc.

You can run an Ethernet extension happily from the router to a central point and then a wireless access point off that (turn off the one in the router) and/or a gigabit switch to feed a network around the house.

Land line phones... do you use the land line? Or just use wireless phones with master at the socket or an extension to central point.

I moved mine from one side of a corner wall to the other i.e. around the corner. Piece of piss, should take you about 30 minutes. Just make sure you take a picture of the wiring on the master socket befour you do anything. But yes in theory it should be a BT/OpenReach job only.

Moving it yourself is illegal, it's tampering with the phone system.  Do what Kenny said or get BT involved.
