hi, i'm a computer moron.

what is the white (openreach) box that lives between my phone-socket and my home hub?

1) do i need it if/when i buy a new wifi router?
2) what's a good (enough) router to replace a homehub (3?)

It's a VDSL modem for your infinity broadband.

If you buy a new router then get one with a VDSL modem built in and you can ditch the openreach box. The BT Homehub 5 is such a router, i have one and that's it, no additional openreach box.

There are other combined VDSL modems/routers but the Homehub 5 is OK.

Any cable modem can be used as a replacement for the home hub

Unless you have WIFI coverage issues though I wouldn't bother replacing it as theres not much point

Also if you have BT vision don't event think about replacing it as you will lose the HD channels

That's assuming he has Infinity, if not it could well be the ADSL microfilter he's talking about. Which you need regardless.

No need for microfilters with infinity
