Currently in Les 2 Alpes with another week to go and my shock is broken beyond repair locally on my downhill bike. Any experience of hiring? How did people find the roundabout brakes?
Any bright ideas appreciated.

I expect it's all downhill from here.

Happened to me a few years ago in Les Gets, and on the first run too!
Had to suck it up and buy a new shock in the end, well a refurbed unit from the local shock fettler, got it fixed on warranty once back home and then sold the temporary shock that I'd bought.

Get next day delivery from alltricks or probikeshop, there will be an option to deliver to a local pickup point usually in a shop. You won't need to wait in. Will likely be cheaper than a weeks rental.

Hiring quality as good as you want to pay for and in any case it won't feel "cheap". Ask them to swap the brakes around (or you will forget and have a sizable crash). Can you not buy a shock from somewhere, is it worth a day not riding to go and pick one up ?

If the rental bike has guide brakes you can swap the levers over easy enough
