Went on holiday last week, took my camera. Canon 450D with the 18-55 kit lens. Shooting away and it started playing up, had the in-OVF green dot flashing intermittently when trying to shoot, as it does when you're out of range of the automatic metering. It was a really sunny day, figured it'd overheated and put it away.

Long story short, it looks like the AF in the lens has packed in. It works intermittently, but more often than not fails. I'm stuck now for what to do about it.

Is it repairable / beyond economic repair? I imagine a replacement won't be that expensive, last time I looked eBay was awash with kit lenes as every bugger has one. Can't really afford to throw a lot of money at it though. Suck it up and stick with MF? Anyone seen this before / have any bright ideas?

Try cleaning all the contacts on both lens and body including the lens mounting ring on both.

Sorted out rogue focussing problems on my 50d and sigma lens combo
Edit - just wipe them with a couple of cotton buds or similar

Aye, good shout. I checked the contacts visually "on site" but can do that properly now I'm back home.

A surprising amount of black gunge that you couldn't actually see on the contacts came off mine.

Have a look on you tube for a rebuild guide. I've pulled my 35-80 apart & successfully rebuilt it.

In all honesty if you can't DIY it, replace... probably with something a bit better! I would avoid eBay though and look at MBP Photographic. I don't like eBay to buy kit from... sell yes... buy no 😉
