Whilst walking last week in the snow and ice, I fell and broke my right collar bone. I knew straight away what I'd done, I heard it go and could feel the break with my fingers.
With the adrenaline kicking in, I walked back to a road where I could be picked up by my wife. Whilst walking I was thinking what a PITA and it would involve hospital, but at the same time thought, actually the pain isn't too bad, I can live with this!
Wrong, how very wrong!!
Some cyclists must be a different breed than me. Having broken ribs before, they are a mere tickle compared to this!
Research suggests that its normal to get a degree of eye-watering agony!!!
Its the hassle factor too. I can hardly move my arm, so Mrs YP has to help me dress, she watches me shower incase I slip, and I have to be off work for 6 weeks. FFS!
Added to that, in Xray they had to cut off my over the head Buffalo top and Arcteryx hoodie, so they are gone too.
Nowhere near as bad as many peoples issues and problems, but for me, a shit few days!

Hope yours goes better than mine.
I'm six months and an operation in and it's still not fixed.
Good luck.

I did mine years ago and it’s still the worst break I’ve had.
The grating bone ends with every breathe, cough and movement was horrible.

Hope you heal fast!

Mine still hurts 10 years later.
Hope that helps 😂

I think breaks that are just cracks without displacement are probably somewhat less painful that having it in multiple pieces / big displacement.

I was fortunate that when i did mine, it was one of the lesser of the breaks, the femur being segmented was more agony, so it paled into insignificance 🙂

That's odd, I broke mine a few years ago and there wasn't much discomfort at all, even when I could feel the ends grating together. It healed pretty well, not quite lined up properly but it'll do.

My first time was seriously painful, but coming round from the op to fix it I found a new definition of pain and suffering...

The second time I was amazed it was broken as it barely hurt at all.

Very much this.
I did mine 18 months ago - as 'clean' as it could have been but Jeeeeesus it bloody hurt.
Doc said it would be stronger than before but I very much doubt that!

I broke mine in 2005, I found it to be very painful indeed, but I also heard stories from people who'd broken theirs and not been that bothered by it. My theory was that it depends on whether the broken parts were being pulled apart or pushed together. Mine were being pushed together and there were some fragments too, and the pain seemed to be primarily because the bits of bones were rubbing together.

Did mine in the middle of Swinley with two small kids. You KNOW when it's broken. Limped out riding one-armed. Loaded the car and drove home in 3rd gear to go to bed (Sunday evening). Went in on Monday for x-rays which failed to identify the subsequently obvious break. Healed over a three months. Then I retested it.

My Grade 3/4 AC separation a few years ago hurt a lot more (along with five ribs, sternum, wrists, face...)

Heal fast.

What sort of sling have you got? Collar and cuff basically u/s, you need to support it properly in the appropriate position.
this sort of thing,it will also ease a lot of the pain.

I've done a few collar bones in the past. none have been particularly painful even when in 3/4 bits. Never used anything more than paracetemol for them. Another vote for magic brian mentioned above in Ipswich, treatment has give faster healing, less pain and more movement when I've been (compared to another very similar break on myself).

I broke mine when I was 5. 32 years later and my shoulder is about 4cm lower than the other one and still hurts quite regularly.
