You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
My 12yr old Grandson has broken his ankle & hospital said it will be 8 weeks off Racing. He is a BMX racer, trains 6 days a week & even in Winter averages 15 hours a week as we are lucky to have National Cycling Centre with Indoor BMX Track nearby so even bad weather if overcome. Ironically he was not Racing when he broke the ankle. He is gutted as will miss first 2 Nationals & 4 Regionals. I am dreading 8 weeks of him having no riding so will be very grateful for any advice on what he can do to keep some fitness level & any diet to aid bone mending.
Listen to the physio
And get in the swimming pool once he can weight bear
8 weeks off for a broken ankle is pretty good IMO! I broke a leg when younger and was out way longer than that.
Depending on how it is set, and for how long - both mobility and atrophy of the calf will be the main problems. Swimming, turbo trainer, balance work and stability will help. When back to weight bearing try standing one footed on a foam mat. Makes a big difference. (or did to me!)
But don't listen to STW - get yourself a good physio and listen to them.
Single leg non-broken ankle turbo training?
Ignore the swimming pool advice. There's a *lot* of stress through the ankle when swimming. Had two major ankle surgeries and swimming was off the table for a long time (and I can still tell now).
Physio physio physio tho.
He could take the opportunity to train all-over fitness aside from legs. Keep his diet should be as clean as anything. You literally are what you eat, so good wholesome nutritious food will help.
