Hi all
I'm sitting on the sofa for the 4 week after falling on ice and breaking my tib and fib at the ankle, I had screws and plates fitted to stabilise the break and will be back to hospital for more x-rays next week, has anyone else suffered this kind of injury? If so how long before your were back on your bike, what did you need to do to get the joint strong and flexible?
Any hope welcome
Do your physio exercises when you are told to. Makes a hell of a difference to the recovery.
I bust my ankle a bit differently and was in a cast for 28 weeks. Got bored fairly quickly.

I still have a limp but as I said, it was a different break
I fractured my fib in October, not as severe as your injury but it still put me off my bike for 6 weeks. Its absolutely fine now. I hope yours heals in good time, don't get too down - it will heal. Take it easy and don't rush it.
Just an aside, an Ortho Surgeon told me that there is some evidence that Ibuprofen can actually delay bone healing when taken long term (after the initial swelling has reduced). Just something to bear in mind if you're taking it. (don't quote me on that though).
Happy healing.
Hi
Friend broke fib and tib in feb 2010 and ended up plated too.
Didnt do none of the recommended physio exercises and still has lots of trouble putting weight on his ankle when trying to cycle, so much so that he will only cycle the flat stuff now.
Please please do the exercises.
I see lots of people who have broken ankles (through my job) and a huge majority heal without any problems if they try to do what there advised to do. Try to keep the ankle mobile but stop if theres lots of pain.
Good luck and have a speedy recovery
Thanks for the well wishes. I'll do as Im told with the exercises, just hope all has set well so I can get back off the road 🙂
I had my (spiral fractured) fibula pinned back together earlier today, have yet to hear how the op went from the orthopod's perspective. Dislocated the ankle at the time so might have some screws stabilising one of the ligaments. Coincidentally I'd almost finished reading Lance Armstrong's "It's not about the bike" - obviously a broken bone is nothing compared to cancer but it's bloody good for your mindset! As have been winning The Ashes and a 3G connection on the iPhone from this hospital bed. Hope your recovery continues well roverman!
