Mobile broadband dongle is the usual answer. If you're using the physical phone line that enters your house then you have to pay for it.

Virgin Media fibre doesn't use the line, but you'll be paying pretty much the same anyhow.

As above. Last time I looked, virgin's without a landline price was slightly more expensive than the combined land line deals you could get. Irritating.

Can you get unlimited download caps on mobile plans? With quick googling seems to me that all the mobile plans are expensive, and none had unlimited caps.

If you want an unlimited service then you'll most likely need a landline.
If you dont intend using the landline for incoming calls, you could just bar all incoming calls on the line, or you could just not have a phone connected into the line.

Landline and cheap BB deal is almost certainly the way to go. I know it's annoying but bear in mind that it's still cheaper than just about anywhere else in the world. (I think)

there are a few free broadband if you pay line rental deals at the moment. Talktalk, sky SSE in no particular order. Some also offer a discount if you pre pay for the year which will protect you against any price rises in the duration of the pre pay.

I cancelled my virgin phone & broadband package and signed up to their broadband only deal. The bloke on the phone then reduced the phone & broadband to make it cheaper than broadband only.

I haven't plugged a phone in since the 1st week 5 years ago. About 2 days after activation the phone started ringing about 7pm every night with sales calls, seems a new number is hot property for virgin to sell on to marketers. I actually cut the box off the wall because it stopped a bookcase fitting 'just so'.

be nice if there was, 4G is about 4 times faster than my landline broadband round here.

I know it's not what you're asking for, but TalkTalk are offering a simple, unlimited broadband package - it's supposed to be £5 on top of line rental. It's free for 18 months at the moment though, and you get a £100 voucher for somewhere or other.

So how do you get broadband now then, magic ?

The line rental is just that, you are paying for the copper from exchange to your house that the broadband is provisioned over, so you have to pay somebody somewhere for that, be it BT or another ISP.

nope, no magic, virgin broadband comes through the cable, they then pay me a discount to retain the working phone line which comes in via the pole on the street, which I presume they have to rent from BT?

With Virgin the phone line is normally a separate wire that splits off from the main wire/cable at the junction box(brown box) to the exterior of the house.

You can disconnect if from the phone socket and leave it coiled up inside the brown external box for neatness.

They are a couple of 4g providers that connect a small antenna/receiver to the exterior of the house for bb with no landline but its location dependant.
I looked into myself but no one at the time was doing it round Manchester.

I'm currently with Xilo(sheffield based company) who do various packages and have been pretty good, only had 1 outage in the last 18months and they compensated me for this automatically without any prompting.
