I've just noticed that our Virgin broadband cost has snuck up to £52 p/m (I was sure it was nearer £30...!).
We get 80Mb service according to broadband speed check just now. Only two of us in the house, Use internet for youtube, netflix etc but very unusual for us both to be using video streaming at the same time.
Looking at money saving expert we can get 11Mb broadband for £11 p/m from Shell. Has anyone gone from 80Mb- 11Mb / will 11Mb be adequate for our needs?
Saving £480 a year would be nice!
Like I've recently said to family who are moving, right now if I was out of contract for broadband, I'd be testing the reception of Three mobile broadband with either a prepaid data SIM or a 3-2-1 PAYG SIM. If satisfactory, I'd be signing up for 12 or 24 month contract with Three for unlimited data, calls and texts for ~£20pcm.
I am on three mobile for my phone - reception in my house is terrible sadly. 100m in either direction along the street, it's fine but sadly not at my house...
Bookmarks thread. Anyone used NOW for bb and phone, assuming they're cheap for a reason?
Should be enough if you don't want to stream 4k but it's straying into annoyingly slow territory for me. I wouldn't want to switch back to ADSL from fibre but I download a lot and play games online.
Depending on your area your speed might drop at peak times which can be annoying.
Have a look to see if there's any good deals around on fibre from other providers. A lot of them offer 30mb packages now which should be plenty. Anyone except Virgin is only fibre to cabinet rather than all the way to your house but in my experience you'll get a much more consistent connection.
It's quite unusual to be in an area that's equipped for Virgin yet only be able to get ADSL (the 11 Mbps thing) via bt etc.
Check here what you can expect: http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
Are there any VDSL products listed?
11Mbps is a bit rubbish. Of course it depends what you use it for. But I'd hesitate before moving from 80 to 11. If that checker shows you have better options, you should pay much less (half) than what you are paying now for them.
OP,
11mbps is more than enough for surfing net and Youtube but I am not sure about Netflix.
Previously I was on 10mbps and everything was fine. No streaming or online gaming by the way.
Now I am with IDNet on Phone (wordwide package) & Broadband FTTC 55/10.
Line is stable, good speed and friendly customer service.
Anyone except Virgin is only fibre to cabinet rather than all the way to your house
Virgin is FTTC too. They just use a different system. They use underground coax cables instead of the thin little phone line cables BT use.
BT and Virgin both offer proper FTTP I believe. But it's rare and expensive.
Also from what I can gather fibre is much less susceptible to peak-time slow down than plain ADSL. So it's not just about the speed but how consistent it is. You probably wont get 11Mbps in the evenings. My 35 Mbps fibre doesn't really drop below 32
I'm over due tho call Virgin up and threaten to cancel actually.
It's a stupid ritual I do every year or 2 as do many, many others.
Last time they almost called my bluff though!
For various reasons I "need" to stay with virgin for tv,BB and phone but they are sods for constantly ramping up the price.
I think I'm on 100mb at the moment which is dumb as I'm in a house as the only user of bb but they keep giving "free" speed increases... Which you do end up paying for of course, one way or another.
One consideration,
If you've got cable broadband and are moving to xDSL you'll need a phone line. So if you don't have one currently your £11/month will be pushing £30/month plus whatever a land line installation costs these days.
Might be worth a phone call to Virgin, threatening to jump to Sky (price up deals first) or just change broadband providers. They might offer you a discounted deal, certainly Sky would if it were the other way around.
im constantly having this conversation with myself.
i have a three sim card in my phone. is it a realistic test to see if i can stream tv from it by tethering?
or would a dedicated three 'router/broadband thing' with a different sim card in give different results, so actually not a good test at all?
OP when your line is contended you might get lower speeds during peak times. Plus any devices you have at home that are getting security updates/patches etc you'll notice this background noise on lower speed links as this behaviour can be aggressive and ultimately have an negative impact on your YT, Netflix and general web browsing experience.
What services do you consume at home? any IOT (smart devices), Spotify, CCTV like Ring?
