I've just moved house.
I was 8 months into an 18 month contract with Vodafone at £25 / month.
They tell me that I now need to start a new 18 month contract at a new rate of £30 / month, or pay an exit fee of £96.
I'm ok with the 18 months. I'm not ok with the price hike.
The terms and conditions say:
"If you are still within the minimum period of your Agreement and wish to transfer your Home Broadband and Phone Services to your new home
then you will become subject to a new agreement with us and a new minimum period will be applicable from the service activation date at your
new home."
Can any of the STW consumer rights experts let me know if I need to suck this up please?
If they won't play ball, I'd pay the £96 and tell them it is a permanent exit and they can go and have a romantic sexual liaison with themselves.
That's my standard method of dealing with businesses that have hostile attitudes to customers.
Epicyclo +1 but without the insult (probably).
You have my sympathy as that clause was likely buried well inside a huge T&C document, but the £5 increase works out (just) cheaper than the exit cost, so I'd suck it up unless you can find a much cheaper deal to offset leaving.
Also, it's small beer in terms of the costs of a house move, and probably less hassle too.
Tell them to stick it and start a new contract with a less hostile supplier. Include the insult so they know you are not a happy camper
If you tell them to stick it then you may find you are transferred to a “Loyalty Team” who will make a better offer.
But then again they might not - so have a backup plan!
I know if the cost goes up on a broadband contact you can exit without fees. Don't know if that still applies to a home move.
What's the cheapest deal you can get as a new customer at the new address with a different provider? You may be able to do better than 25 quid, which would tip the balance in favour of telling them to do one.
However, Vodafone put up their prices in March/April this year, chances are they will try in on again at the same point next year, at which point you can dump them without penalty, so effectively you are only tying yourself in for well under a year to the extra fiver a month.
I'd gladly pay £96 not to have a contract with Vodafone.
We got out of our contract with Vodafone broadband because they could not supply the same service to our new home (their estimated speed was slower than at our old place). Worth checking.
Thanks all. I'll pay the 96 and get a new provider. I know it's not a huge cost but I'm moving from one rented house to another so it's not insignificant. I don't think martinhutch's advice will work since my bill didn't go up in march, so I assume my new one wouldn't either.
Pay the exit fee and get the new contract through a cashback site - you will likely get the fee (or most of it) back on a new contract.
+1
Usually decent cashback deals out their for BB, even relatively basic ones like my £25pcm Plusnet fibre and landline gave £40 through Quidco.
That is crap you are not ending the contract you only want to amend the address. The terms and conditions do not state the length of the new minimum period and therefore you can argue that you can be given a 10 month min period on the new contract to make a total of 18months. Also you are not triggering the exit fee they are ending the contract for you and telling you to take a new one out so do not pay.
This worked with Talktalk a few years ago.
Why is this Vodafone’s fault? You signed a 24 month contract with them knowing that you’d have to pay a penalty fee if you leave early, because they get charged by Openreach for every new connection or disconnection to the VDSL network.
I think they’re actually being pretty reasonable. Pay the £96 if you want to go elsewhere.
Internet connections should be the same as basic utilities, being tied into contracts for 18/24 months is a joke. Especially when you are moving house. virgin did the same to me except the couldn't provide me with any service at my new address, but then expected continued payment for the last 5 months of my contract. Im with plussnet now, they dont charge a disconnection fee if they cant provide you with a service at a new address.
I was with Virgin. I moved to an area they don't cover and they just cancelled my contract with no termination fees. Try phoning. I usually find direct contact gets around strict T&Cs

Martin Lewis would have you commited for such a weak attitude.
Besides, you didn't read the FP very closely...
