Really disappointed that The Caffreys did a cover , they sounded so good in their kitchen then the lead singer drowned out the harmonies. Same with that Bhangra band, where was the crossover there? They just payed it straight.
That Brum ska band should have been there instead of the shouty doctors.

Agreed, the covers spoiled the performances. Interesting show though, I'll be tuning in again.

Made me wonder (along with some recent posts by musicians on here) how many of the bands/acts I've got albums of would qualify as part time. When even Future of the Left have day jobs then I'd guess you need to go fairly high up the popularity charts before it's a viable job. There was an interview with Field Music a few years ago where they said that if they were employing themselves they'd be done for not paying the minimum wage so low were their earnings.

I never quite understand why bands that want to showcase their talents play covers. If you have the skills and creativity to make music then make some of your own. I'm saying that playing covers is bad, or means that you are not a good musician, but when it comes to a show like this you should really have the guts to play your own stuff.

Covers have their place, and in fact are needed when you play a pub gig. A lot of the crowd will not be there to specifically hear you play your music, so you have to give them tunes they know.

This is the important vote.
Think I'm going King Salami. The Caffreys lost it with their cover.

Not always a huge fan of ska, but the winning band were ridiculously tight.

Teleman have day jobs too

Anyhow - this programme. The winners were great winners and good series. Hookies week was the weakest TV I thought.

The format of the gig was one original song and one cover version? They all did two songs..

That format wasn't made clear in the first round.

Have just started buying all of King Salami's records. My new favourite band.
They rock.

Lush may well qualify at the moment, the band have just got back together after twenty years, and after seeing them at the Roundhouse a little while back Miki said to her friends in the audience that she'd be seeing them in the office on Monday!
Difficult to know how long they can maintain that, they've just done a tour of the US, they've just done an unannounced festival gig in Finland for the first time, they're doing another US tour later this year, more UK dates, I believe, Green Man in August, and a new album.
When there are families, children, jobs etc that have been the centre of a musicians life for twenty years, and suddenly there is huge public interest in the band again, and tour and gig opportunities that were never there first time around, it must be very difficult to know how to strike a balance.

Missed this but it looks good.

As for covers, my band plays covers as we all have familys, real jobs and other commitments. By playing just covers we know all our songs are good, we cna focus our time on playing them well rather than writting them and it gets a lot of ego out of the way as well!

I saw the first one and it looked shit. Full of unoriginal old pub bands..Certainly not my idea of a great live band. . and midge ure.. why?

CZ - they're talking about a tv show, not some average old band from the 90s reforming 😆

Was it Bombskare from Edinburgh that won?

They are a kick ass band - being going for years. Always a great gig.

Jimbobo , The Caffreys were doing some amazing harmonies with their originals.
Then they did a bad rocky version of a jacko song and lost their main strength.
It wasn't the fact they did a cover version it was the fact they did a bad cover version.
The lead singer is bloody superb I just wanted to hear more of his talents.
