Coming by bike from Cardiff across the bridge I always come through (or past) Almondsbury and down Gloucester road. Any better alternatives for cycling? Gloucester road is quite busy.
Google's preferred route is directly South from the bridge and through Pilning then Westbury on Trym but what they propose looks rather fiddly.
Gloucester RoadBristol is quite busy.
Just been looking at a map of the area, which I only know vaguely from driving around it for work, but you could brave the A403 from Aust down to Northwick, then take the B4055 down through Pilning, Marsh Common, Easter Compton, pick up the A4018 past Catbrain and Filton, then on to the B4055 down towards Henbury, Westbury-on-Trym, Stoke Bishop, Durdham Down, Clifton, and down to the centre via the docks.
I’m sure there’s loads of different routes, but that looks like it might be a bit less busy.
I live thirty-odd miles from Brissle, and, while I love the city, I’ve spent a lot of time crawling along in traffic no matter whereabouts in the city I happen to be; around Cribbs in particular.
Being on a bike has a lot of advantages...
Hard to beat Gloucester road for speed if you don't mind the traffic but there are quieter routes. There's a cycle path by the MOD/UWE then onto Wordsworth rd, then the Concorde way cycle path through st Werburghs, over the M32 then follow the river to Cabot Circus. Mostly traffic free.
I thought this was gonna be about the profanisaurus entry for M32.
Or if you aren’t in any rush,
Down the coast road to Avonmouth, down the Portway next to the river to the Harbour Side, mostly cycle path. Alternative to hop over the Avonmouth bridge and down the quieter cycle path on the other side of the river at the edge of Leigh Woods. The Avonmouth bit is fairly industrial but it will be quiet on a weekend and this route is quite flat, not great in a headwind mind! Have a nice ride!
If you are asking whether there is a faster route than your current route, then the answer is probably no.
If you are asking for the quietest or more scenic approach, I suggest following Sustrans Routes 410 then 4 from the Bridge (which is what I think Google may be pointing you towards).
My personal choice would be the following: Severn Bridge > B4055 Pilning to Easter Compton > Berwick Lane to Hallen > Blaise Castle > Portway A4 (via bus lane or cycle path) > city centre. See Google Maps and you'll get what I mean.
Google maps is probably picking up the Route 4, has off road sections from Cribbs Causeway via Blaise Castle Estate and past Clifton Down. It is fiddly but its signposted. Plenty other routes too, including Concorde Way from the north, or head south to Avonmouth and use the shared path on the Portway (flat but longer route). See the Bristol Rural map: regional cycle maps
I suppose it depends how often you do it if it is worth learning new routes, but Bristol certainly has lots of more pleasant commuting than many cities.
I've done the 'scenic' route option of Almondsbury->Easter Compton->Hallen->Henbury->Westbury-on-Trym->Whiteladies Rd route still usually a lot of traffic from Henbury onwards though
I've reverted to my usual strategy for avoiding heavy traffic - leave late!
