My Son has requested one of the above for his Birthday. They all look a bit meh in my eyes but I’m guessing they can’t all be terrible. Any recommendations or obvious ones to avoid. Obviously not expecting anything spectacular, just don’t want to buy him a piece of crap.

Numark PT-01 is quite spendy at £135, but has been around for ages so tons of them available secondhand at around £60. There is a big modding market for them too to make them into proper hifi, or add or swap controls such as faders fo DJ use.

This is a great question. Every one I've come across (looking at you, Crosley!) has looked great but sounded like shit

The newer Numark PT-01 Scratch looks interesting, if the scratch switch feature is of use.. I have seen some MPC beatmakers using it as their sampling tool but that may be because they've been given it to feature in youtube videos (eg Malobeats), but I'd be tempted if I needed such a turntable based on that fact I suppose.

It's worth knowing what the intended use case is (a lot of these TTs might fall into the 'USB ripping' category and that might not necessarily mean 'portable' in terms of not requiring a 240V-12V powersupply and therefore mains power.

That Numark will work off 6 D cells. That might be necessary if it's for crate digging and listening to vinyl in a charity shop etc for convenience,

another option is to use a Ripcord USB cable and powerbank
