Hiya, i have just updated my very old play 5 to a new move. I also got a boost to extend range as its a stretch at times. All very good and happy.
However I cant bring myself to skip/bin or send back the old stuff. Anyone hear of getting it working as a stand alone system so I can donate it somewhere?
I have 3 sonos components working together. A Sonos one we got a couple of years ago and a connectamp and a connect I bought in 2009. All working fine in the same system. You have to use the previous version of the controller software for the older components to work
My old 1 is a brick
Are you on S2? If so the old stuff won’t work on your system any more. However it will still work fine on an S1 system and even the older stuff holds value quite well - I sold all my older Sonos Amps recently and got 50% of their original value despite being older models only compatible with S1.
my system is all on S2 so they wont work for me, and I cant go back. But as suggested if someone already had an older S1 set up they should work fine yeah?
Yes. You can keep them but only if you are prepared to have 2 systems that won’t integrate together, one on S1 and the other on S2.
Set it up as S1 in a different part of the house. Mine is away at Uni. Very popular with my son’s friends.
Am I right in saying that the 5 has aux inputs?
I'd hate to brick it.... Someone will want it.
For your own house it'd be a pain to run both Sonos S1 and S2 software; but to give it away/ sell it'd have value. It'll still run on the S1 Sonos software (which is still supported), so someone would have use from it. And am I imagining it or does it have a 3.5mm line in jack too?
The bricking thing comes from the original Sonos offer which gave people 30% off a new product but only on the understanding that Sonos would kill the old device remotely, rendering it scrap. After much criticism for the idea of deliberately making a perfectly working device useless they went back on this and continued to offer the 30% discount but leaving the older kit working for the owner to do with as they wished. For me that involved selling them. I got £200 for my older Connect Amps, together with 30% off the new Sonos Amps it meant in effect I could buy a £600 Sonos Amp for a net outlay of £120. Not often you get deals like that.
I’ve still got 30% off sitting in my Sonos account waiting for it to go towards a Port to replace my old ZP80 (pre Connect).
I’m sure someone will buy the old one too for a few quid.
Although I do think the port is overpriced.
As above, either use it as a standalone speaker on a separate S1 network or claim your 30% trade-up discount (will sit in your account until you want to use it) and sell the old speaker on.
boost and the older play 5 would work together on an S1 network.
I forgot to say that I also have a gen—1 play 5 so my system runs S1. The app nags you to upgrade, but it’s fine otherwise.
Yes the 5 has AUX. It’s been a pain to select it via the app to be honest. I ran a TV through it but Mrs Tires never could work it properly. Aus should have been the automatic default override but it isn’t.
Aux should have been the automatic default override but it isn’t.
Yeah that's odd when my Connect Amp (one of the v2 ones with more memory that still works with my other S2 stuff) does have an automotive switchover to aux.
Capitalism: a system which has trained people to keep giving money to a firm that rubs built-in obsolesence in their faces and charges them for it.
I was seriously looking to heavily invest in sonos until they did this. It's environmentally reprehensible but it seems in this day and age a commercial possibility.
I guess with the amount of people who bend over and take it from Apple - and like it - we shouldn't be surprised.
Stop giving them money. My $0.02...
I’m sorry that really is bollocks. Sonos managed to keep their units working and updating for more than 10 years, far longer than most electronic devices. Imagine how a 10 year old iPhone would work now. The processors can no longer work with the latest technology but they continue to support older kit with a working app that will continue to function in the long term but without the latest updates. In addition to this they have given existing customers an indefinite 30% discount on new products, 1 for every older unit you own. What more they should have done other than predicting the future when they first produced the kit? Maybe gone into the future and fitted processors that didn’t exist at the time???
The initial bricking proposal was out of order but Sonos seems to have handled it well and came up with a reasonable solution.
Can someone confirm that if you trade up a play 5 you can continue to use it (all be it just on the S1 controller)?
Yes if you log into your Sonos and do the trade-up, you then have a permanent 30% discount to use when you feel like. Your older device you can continue to use on S1. Some newer devices will work on S1 or S2 (eg the Beam) but the latest ones (Sonos Amp, Arc, latest Sub) will only work on S2.
nice one cheers.
I've had a dead bridge for a while now and just traded that in, still happy using the play 5 on S1 so woth checking.
