Need some advice on building a homemade bbq
Can you build it from ordinary bricks?
Can I use a 1200x600 slab as the base for the coals or will it crack?
Any other useful pointers?
Ps, the plan is to build one with a flue/chimney which can double as a fire for the evening when it cools off...
Not much help, but. My dad built a brick bbq years ago, and it never had any problems, so it can be done. That's all the input I got... 😆
I just used normal bricks for mine, the base is paving slab as it's sat on the raised patio wall thing outside of my house.
Sounds like it's straight forward enough then
Thanks
I've built a couple with slab bases supported on 3 sides. They've both cracked, but never fallen in. Best one had a grill side and a hotplate side made from 6mm sheet steel. Once oiled and used a few times, the hotplate was a really good non-stick cooking surface. Great for fish, veg, onions etc with the meat on the grill side. That bbq was based on 2 900x600 slab bases.
Yup - hotplate and grill - that's my pointer fwiw.
When bricks are made they are fired to around 1,000 degrees C so no problem using them in a BBQ, they may discolour a bit, but they should be fine.
I've used slabs as a base. They cracked for me. Mind you that was in a (temporary) garden incinerator and I had a blazing fire going, rather than just a few bbq coals.
Normal bricks are fine to use.
I've just had a look and mine isn't actually on the slab, sorry! I've put a layer of bricks on top of the slab.
I built mine around some paving slabs* and ordinary bricks. Then I tried to sort out a grill to fit.
That was a bit silly!
Start with a grill and THEN design the BBQ around that 🙄
In the end a mate welded some steel to make a brilliant grill for me, but it cost me a fork service for him and it took 6 months 😀
* I used Marshalls slabs from the builders merchants - they weigh a ton and are massive. So they dont crack.
