Do we get a day off for the funeral?

Is the most important question.

Hopefully it will all fall apart long before Wills gets a look in

Hopefully.

I'd strip them of everything and point them in the direction of the nearest job centre. See how far they could climb on their own merits.

No, not under current 'protocol' anyway.

Best we can hope for is Queen abdicating (it's been hinted) then we'd get a day off for the coronation of King Charles, or even King William.

So, if it happens, where is everyone going to ride on their extra day off?

I liked him - RIP. Maybe it’s because I’m rapidly turning into the embarrassing drunk uncle in my own right!

As for Bargain Hunt - I’ve gone off it these days - how do they manage to find people with such a penchant for losing money FFS!

Just been on twitter, what is nauseating is that those commentators who might well be ambivalent about the death of any member of the royal family, aside from their death being a personal tragedy, have to be over effusive in their condolences cos they're so scared about the right coming after them. But the 'right' aren't necessarily that fussed about personal tragedy but it's now a culture war issue

So you get a nuclear arms race of condolences and grieving where each side of the culture war has to outdo the other but it's the 'right' who are on the offensive as it's their war

What a load of bollox.

Do you actually think that would happen? You can strip them off all their titles etc, even turf them out of any publicly owned buildings, if there are any and they might even thank you. If you're talking about actually taking property they own like some kind of French Revolutionary, how long do you think it would take them to earn more? Shit the bed, if Kardashians can claim to be billionaires and be close enough that some people believe them, how much do you think 'Brand Royal' is worth?

No, they won't be signing on any time soon.

But its ruining my Radio 6 listening for the day.

The reason for the BBC approach is that only a certain number of staff (my brother being one of them!) are trained to broadcast during a Cat 1 Royal Death and deal with all the live role-ins and protocols. My brother has been carrying around the scripts in his bag for the last 2 years (he did just dash into work, but they found enough people in the building who hadn't just woken up after 4 hours of sleep post nights!). On radio, 5-live have the experience of dealing with complex live broadcasting and therefore they take over (with radio 4 presenters); same with BBC Newsroom for TV.

But

the legacy he leaves through the Duke of Edinburgh Award will live on.

You know he had bugger all to really do with that, don’t you? Other than giving out the awards.

Can you back that up? Would it all have happened, around the world, without his support?

I'm bored with the coverage already, but it's no worse than when Diana died, and he certainly achieved a lot more than she did.

What them personally or a load of buildings / land which rightly belong to the state?
If they’re that good at earning they’ll be fine at getting a new job

They really don't.

Do you think that all that tourism revenue is generated by people who want to see the Royal Family?

I guess nobody goes to France as they have no Royal family?

Wow. Someone died. Someone's husband and many people's family member. And someone quite a lot of people are quite fond of.

I'm a staunch leftie and anti royalist, but I still think a lot of these posts fail on rule 1 by some margin.

FWIW, fishing generates more than £445m to the economy per annum - or at least it did in 2019.

If they’re that good at earning they’ll be fine at getting a new job

Quite, two members of the family did exactly that by renouncing their titles and no longer receiving a stipend from the state (or the Duchy of Cornwall to be precise) and the media went nuts. The world has gone mad I tell you.

[Disclaimer] I actually quite like Harry.

I came here for the comments. I’m not disappointed.

There's a lot of this, too.

There's a dichotomy at play here for some people (me included).

Someone's family member has died, I'm sad for them, but he was 99, so good innings and all that.

OTOH, as a republican who dislikes a lot (all?) that the royal family stands for, then I'm not personally sad.

Not happy though, that would be churlish in the extreme.
Ambivalent covers it I would say.

So...here's my Prince Phillip story.

My dad (as part of his RAF officer duties) was the scout leader for the combined cubs and scouts pack in Kai Tak in Hong Kong. The Queen and Phillip are doing a royal visit (it's 1976) we're all waiting (a bit haphazardly) on the quayside waving our little flags and getting a wee bit overexcited. As they disembark Philip says hello to all the local dignitaries, espies my dad, and makes a bee-line for him. They have some chat about scouting and Philip says something along the lines of what a handful we all looked. he was holding up proceedings at this point, so made his goodbyes to us all, and trotted back to the waiting car....

Fast forward to the mid eighties, my dad's now retired from the RAF and working for an aircraft manufacturer, their new building is being opened by Prince Phillip. They're all waiting in line and shaking hands...Phillip says hello to my dad, shakes his hand goes onto the next chump in line; stops, takes a pace back and says to him, "Weren't you in charge of that bunch of unruly scouts? Hong Kong wasn't it?"

I'm not overly invested either way with his passing away, obviously it's sad for anyone to die. And for all yeah he had a life of crazy privilege which is partly why he made it to 99 when the average life expectance for his generation was 55... but he did also live a life of service. He didn't stop til he physically couldn't do it- like the queen he knew the two come together, privilege and duty. That makes a big difference. I mean, compare that with today's royalty, the CEO...

But it's not biggerthan a doctor or nurse dying in the line of service fighting covid and we've brushed so many of those under the rug with no more than a clap. The whole royal death carnival and "national outpouring of grief" always hits me as absurd but this time round that contrast's going to make it more obvious for a lot of people I think, especially with the PM who oversaw it all telling us all how sad this particular death is and how it brings us all together but don't mention the 1000 dead NHS staff or ask how many of those could have been avoided or ask for an enquiry or a pay rise or any sort of meaningful recognition at all. And wider, just all those people who died early or needlessly and didn't get a proper sendoff.

I do think it'll be interesting to see a covid royal funeral though. I'm not expecting Priti Patel to send in the stormtroopers or for the media to dismiss everyone as criminals when there's mass gatherings for this death though.

Can you back that up?

Yep:

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh first considered the idea of a national programme to support young people’s development in the autumn of 1954 at the request of his inspiring former headmaster, Kurt Hahn.

In the post-war era, His Royal Highness wanted to bridge the gap between leaving formal education at 15 and entering into National Service at 18, so that young men made the best use of their free time, found interests and acquired self-confidence and a sense of purpose that would support them into their future and help them to become well-rounded citizens.

Following discussions with the Minister of Education in 1955, The Duke of Edinburgh consulted a number of national voluntary youth organisations with a ‘boy’ membership with a view to starting a pilot.

Led by Sir John Hunt (later Lord Hunt), who provided the necessary administration and co-ordination amongst the partner organisations as the first Director, a pilot for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was launched in February 1956. The programme had four sections; Rescue and Public Service, Expeditions, Pursuits and Projects, and fitness, which would holistically support, guide and upskill young men as The Duke envisaged.

(From the DofEA's own website)

So; he didn't come up with the concept, and I think the notion of him doing much more than chatting to a few others about it, is a bit of a stretch really. He certainly didn't put in thousands of hours work into setting up and running the scheme, that was done by others. It was part of a raft of projects founded in the post war rebuilding era.

Would it all have happened, around the world, without his support?

Wouldn't it have? Who knows. I think his input in anything beyond a nominal status, is pretty unlikely. People like that don't tend to do any actual work.

These threads always bring out the classiest of posts, don’t they?

Hmm; inappropriate, offensive jokes at someone else's expense? It's what he would have wanted. 😀

Other than that..very old guy dies, in a year many other old guys have died. Sad for his family but other than that don't particularly care either way

I feel empathy for his family but people pretending to be genuinely upset by the death of a 99 year old stranger are just lying to themselves and everyone else and they know they are. That, or trying to score points in some game only they know the rules to. I’m not sad in the slightest because I’m a lot of things but liar and hypocrite are not amongst them. The faux grief is vomit inducing.

I wasn’t even sad when my own 93 year old grandfather died. He lived a long life, died peacefully and got to see his kids, grandkids and a couple of great grandchildren. Nothing to mourn there.

My brother has been carrying around the scripts in his bag for the last 2 years (he did just dash into work, but they found enough people in the building who hadn’t just woken up after 4 hours of sleep post nights!).

Reminds me of my cousin, who is a stenographer and does TV subtitles. Working at Channel 5, this meant doing them live for the news, but for something like Neighbours, you just set up the pre-packed subtitles, made sure they were in sync, and read a book for 25 minutes.

One quiet day, most of them were in a restaurant up the road (where they were not supposed to be, because big news could break at any time) when someone gets a text: "The Queen mother has died". Cue several Channel 5 staff throwing a load of cash at a waitress and sprinting back up the road to the office...

(edit: Now I come to think of it, even more topically, the same cousin once put a typo live on air - The Queen and the Duck of Edinburgh)

Mine is a DofE Gold experience at Holyrood a... few(!)... years ago.

He came over to our group from Gourock, approached me, just because I was the biggest I think (I was a bit of a freak by west coast standards) and asked:
"And where did you do your hike?"
"The island of Arran." said I.
"Did you see any ghosts?"
"Erm... no"

Now with obvious shaking silent mirth from my 17yr old unsupportive friends beside me.

Great story! 😉

Agreed but not seeing much evidence of that in this thread, just the usual suspects trotting out the same old tropes about council houses, taking back buildings already owned by the state, and lives of privilege, all a bit pathetic and 2 dimensional really. I think the general feling is he had a good innings, did some good, didn't always think before he spoke, made the most of his position and generally avoided breaking rule no 1. Now what's for lunch.

Meh. Being in the EU was worth £85bn a year, which we ripped up to 'save' £12bn.

I'd happily forego that £400m just to see one of the things the flagshaggers hold dear smashed on the ground in front of them.

Yup. And I've just learnt from the telly that the Queen has a son called Edward. She's kept quiet about him. I don't even know what he looks like.

Is the BBC going to be like this for a couple of weeks?

Just asked my brother and he also asked his Radio 1/2/6 mate and they didn’t know. Know when the Queen goes there is no comedy etc broadcast for at something like 7 days.

I wonder what the papers will say about any of us when we die.

"Who?"
