Heading up to Scotland on Saturday - A50-M6-A75.

Any ideas for places to stop and stretch our legs just off the route rather than the services? I love Tebay but it's manic on changeover day!

Two allegedly grown ups, a 12 year old almost teenager and an 8 year old wannabe teenager ......

Stop in at Annan. Good chippy and you could have a nice walk along the river to stretch your legs.

Penrith - and walk up the 'Beacon' hill at the back of town.

We stopped at Dumfries. I know that's virtually there, went round sweetheart abbey. Had a picnic etc.

Derby. Seriously, why go anywhere else? According to my colleagues it's the best place in the world.

If you are leaving early (to avoid the worst of the traffic thru South and West Yorkshire), why not go M1-A66 rather than A50-M6 and stop around Bedale / Richmond? Nice old town centres and riverside walks. And you could visit the Castle at Richmond.

Get off the m6 at j36 and head for Staveley. Eat at wilfs, have look at wheelbase and have a walk along the river or up to gurnal dubs. Cut back through burnside and up to shap to get back on m6.

Or Kirkby Lonsdale

Oooo stavely. Not wilfs, as good as it is, "more?" Definitely "more?"

Yes, more? definitely is worth it too - I can recommend their treacle bread.

5 hour drive? Get off early and arrive for lunch at your destination.

My family are blighted by a dad/driver who regards mid journey stops as wasted mileage.

Killington Lake is my/our choice
Gretna Gateway for some retail therapy.
Chippy(sit in) in Annan as already mentioned. Something different/touristy; https://www.annandaledistillery.com
Depending on time you get to Dumfries Kilnford at end of bypass. Detour to Loch Arthur via Dalbeattie.

I'd suggest a slight detour to High Force:

Close(ish) to Barnard Castle / off the A66 at Penrith, or go up the M1/A1/A66
