World Cup madness, part 1: we've just been out for a pre-match meal at our local Italian. Very nice it was too. Pride of place on the restaurant wall is Pirlo's signed AC Milan shirt. An interesting (heated but good-natured) debate about the group was taking place. The upshot of this was an over-enthusiastic engerland fan genuinely betting 5 grand, against the signed shirt, that we top the group, and not Italy.

I don't know what happens if Uraguay win it.

I'm amazed at how much rolling around on the floor when a player gets an inane knock, good job they don't play rugby

I think every non-Brazilian wants Croatia to score.

...well, apart from all those far eastern betting syndicates.

Edit: Ladies & Gentleman, Croatia seem to have Bruce Grobbelaar in goal. I imagine his bank balance is doing well.

Bah.

Well at least from what I've seen so far the ball is round but not too round.

So England might have a chance.

I was getting at the fact it was goal from open play without any refereeing assistance 🙄

I think the early shot fooled the keeper. Good goal. First time I've ever heard the phrase "toe-ended" though (about 6 times)

On the basis of this one I don't think I'll be watching many games. Between professional fouls, simulation, silent-film acting and a dodgy ref it was painful viewing.

If they keep showing those two hands with 2014 before and after every replay, I'll have kicked the telly in before the first Engerland game! That and Andy ****ing Townsend is too much to deal with simultaneously!

Yup. He went the right way, got behind it, and let it go through his hands. He'd done the hard part.

Chris Waddle agrees with me, so there.

Decent start, not the best game but competitive, enjoyable start. Yon Croatia keeper is muck.

Brazil, not the best and very nervy but they will get out their group and grow in stature IMO.

not harsh at all he got both hands behind it. Weak as hell. And he's clearly got issues getting down quick enough, utter muck.

Apparently we knocked him back after a trial, thank god.

I find watching grown men throw themselves on the ground and trying to con referees a bit embarassing to be honest. They'll strut around town being the big tough guy with tats everywhere, yet hit the deck whining like a little brat if it gets them a free kick or a penalty. And get paid a kings ransom for the privilege.

Retrospective yellow cards during tournaments are the way forward.

I think they should just inflict on them the actual injury that they've just pretended they've got. So if you go down like you've just been shot.....

Quite a sad way to start the WC. Wish Croatia had equalised.

Ok, no penalty, but good job the c players didn't have respect on their shirt when they surrounded the ref on the penalty.

The "beautiful" game!?!?!

Come on folks have you not seen it before?

This is football. By the end of the tournament there will have been goals, dives, leg breaking tackles, yellow cards, red cards, penalty saves, penalty misses. The list goes on.

You might disagree with it being the "beautiful" game but a big tournament like this is always full of drama and I love every minute.

Even if its not always fair and the good guys never win (England).

I'm all for respecting the ref's decisions, but by that stage of the game, it must have been fairly frustrating to have been a Croatian. To see a penalty given for that, when you're still in the game would make most people lose any sense of reason. They couldn't really buy a decision, some of Brazil's "50-50" challenges were bordering on the dirty side of physical. It was almost as if Scolari had told them to go out and go in hard, they were the host nation in the opening game, they'd get the home-team decisions.

On balance, Brazil deserved to win it I think, but they didn't do much to endear themselves.

It was never a penalty and I am not sure why you should respect a decision that is incorrect and just cost you the game.

Great start to the tourney. Few goals, some good football, bit of controversy and the underdog stepped up + some big big noise (politics at the gate too.)

Well played Croatia. They wuz robbed. Certainly lots of talking points, ref was terrible aside from penalty he pinged the Croatian for a foul on the keeper which never was. If Brazil are going to win this they will have to be a lot better.

Roll on Spain v Holland.

They weren't at all.

I get 2 impressions from this thread. 1. that quite a few of you don't like fitba, and secondly, there's a group getting their excuses in early before the inevitable 2nd round pumping out that England will mostly likely receive! 😆

Never a penalty.

They need to bring TMOs into football, it would end all this ridiculous diving overnight.

And the way the players treated the, admitedly poor, referee was appalling

last night. what seems like controversy will soon be overshadowed, never a penalty and no reason that goal should be disallowed. However the final ten minutes sums it all up, Croatia had posession and looked threatening, Brazil picked up the ball and it was in the back of the net. a clunky start from an under pressure favourite, hope that things balance out and Croatia make it out of the group too.

tonight. the spain/netherlands rematch will be a stale cagey affair after the hype, skip it, go to the pub and settle down to watch Chile v Socceroos at 11. /tipoftheday

aye penalty was soft as shite, but the disallowed goal was a foul on the keeper.

the croatia keeper not being able to save a couple of goals and being slow as hell is what got them beat.

Croatia blew their chance, as brazil where there for the taking if they wanted.

Its a game of opinions and here's mine:

The keeper was crap and should have saved both goals.
The penalty was a joke and the Ref should be chucked out of the tourney.
The adjudged fould wiping out the Croatia goal was a goal. The Ref has deemed that an attacker cannot challenge the keeper for a high ball.

In terms of Cloggy's v Spain tonight....I don't see this as a cagey affair at all. Not with that #### Robben on the pitch!

Justice done in the end, just about - provided qualification doesn't do down to goal difference...

I sometimes wonder in the group games if these referees should be involved in this level of football...

In fairness, if you recall, the last world cup final didn't reflect too well on britain's top referee - you could hardly accuse Howard Webb of not having the experience to be there.

What's with this look up and cross your arms malarky? All the team intros do it, they even do it for f1 now. Just makes em look shifty IMO, like they were doing something inappropriate then noticed the camera and try to look nonchalant.
