In theory how long would you leave it before contacting seller about an issue?

1 day, 10 days, more?

I hate eBay.

Not turned up? Currently I'd give it a week from when they said they'd sent it, I think.

Something wrong with them? Why wouldn't you contact them as soon as you know there's a problem?

shall we have a sweepstake on how many replies this thread requires before we find out what the question is?

I'm going for 23

Brakes were sold 2nd march.
Pair of deore disc brakes off my orange five.
Both pairs had almost new pads fitted along with a brand new set of pads.
Advertised that I had to cut the hose due to frame fitting and can either re-attach the hose or provide an olive so the buyer can fit it.

The buyer didn't tell me what he wanted so I sent him a message saying I will leave the hose loose and supply an olive as I had to pack it for delivery.

I've just received a message nearly 60 days after being sold, he said the lh piston is stuck and lever goes all the way to the bars.

He's asking how we can solve this.

Everything was sold for £31 including postage.

Now, the brakes worked fine with no issues when I took them off the bike.

I've asked him if he has fitted the olive as was advertised, and he should bleed the brakes as well.

23 replies indeed.......

Lol @ bruneep
Was wondering where the advert stated ready to fit and go. Glad you stealth edited.
The listing was as below

Shimano deore m615 Disc Brake Front And Rear. Condition is Used.
The brakes have pads fitted with plenty of life in them and also comes with 2 brand new pairs of spare brake pads.

Hose lengths 950mm and 1320mm

There is also an olive to reconnect the rear brake hose as I had to cut the hose to remove the brake.
I can either re-attach the hose or leave it for the buyer to attach if the hose needs to be passed through the bike frame.

Can either pickup in Chorley area or delivered

Is the buyer just asking for some info/help?

He might not actually expect a refund but im sure he'll accept if offered.

That said, if he keeps "pushing" then yeah, offer refund.

60 days is right into “jog on” territory. That’s 60 (minus shipping) days if riding for all you know

Does eBay give a **** after 60 days?

Ebay offers a fairly generous 30 days after delivery to report faulty items. He hasn't availed himself of that looong inspection period. How much longer should he have? A month? 6 months, A year? Getting dangerously close to a warranty.

I'd be willing to help with information, but state that over 2 moths ago, when they were shipped, they were working fine. Perhaps sitting in a box, with no fluid in the calliper for 2+ months has dried the seal and so has a stuck piston.

I've asked him if he fitted the olive as stated in the auction and messaged him about bleeding the brake. I also contacted him twice about the loose hose before shipping but he didn't reply.

I suspect he hasn't done a bleed and that's why the lever is pulling to the bars.

Am I being fair if I offer a full refund after he ships the brakes back to me?

Personally I think leaving it almost 60 days is pushing it, but will see what he says in the next eBay message.

eBay doesn't (30 days I think?) but IIRC the PayPal window (assuming that's how he paid!) is a massive 180 days! (hopefully he doesn't realise that lol). Got very little sympathy for someone who waits 2 months before checking out a 2nd hand purchase 😂

Totally agree with the 60 days telling him to do one.

You're being overgenerous. They probably won't come back in the same condition you sent them. There's no warranty with a private sale, they just have to be as listed. Buyer should have come back to you sooner, it's their problem now.

He’s not fitted them properly or bled them or both. Keep going with helpful words of inspiration for as long as you can be bothered and then either ignore or firmly inform him that there’s nothing more “we” can do.

60 days is very far into "sounds like your problem not mine" territory for eBay sales. No refund, if you are feeling very generous you could offer to help give instructions on bleeding, but that's it.

Why would you offer to take them back? He's had them for 2 months. As you say, probably hasn't done the necessary to fit them correctly. If you can see if he'll admit whether they've been on the bike a while or he's literally just installed them. Don't offer a refund, see how it pans out.

60 days after sale!?!

Ha! I would 100% tell them politely to go away and not even entertain getting sucked into any form of communication or negotiation after that.

If you do get them back then assemble and bleed them before reselling. I appreciate what you did gives the buyer more flexibility but it adds complications you don't need. Look how new brakes are usually sold.

No the buyer never left feedback.
They never do these days.

It's not quite 60 days but getting there from the point of sale. The buyer had decent feedback so thought there wouldn't be an issue.

I await his response...........

The problem, as I see it, is that he's made a hash of fitting and / or bleeding the brakes. That's not specifically your fault (especially if he's had 60 days for a bit of gumminess in one piston to turn into "it's permanently stuck"), that's a squirt of GT85 and wiggling the pistons around with the lever closed to ensure both are moving smoothly, and bleeding it properly without leaving a big bubble of air in the system when he joined the bits together.

What's it worth to you? It sounds like the buyer expects to have a perfectly working system for whatever they paid for it. It sounds like you sold a system with the caveat that it's a separated lever and caliper, i.e. not working, understanding that it needs connecting and properly bleeding to make it work. It might be worth talking to a bike shop that's local to the buyer and asking what it costs to bleed a single brake. It might be cheaper than refunding the total cost and having a buyer leave negative feedback that you're an arse, when you're patently not and care about them having a working set of brakes...

Blacklist him now so if this dispute goes your way he can't win any of your other auctions and **** you over that way.

Pierre, I hear you but I offered to attach the hose and bleed but he didn't take the offer so I presumed he would be happy to re-attach and bleed himself.

I still haven't heard anything from him so will wait and see.

Would be silly to refund, sounds like he messed up the bleed, but I would have just attached the hose and bled the brake before selling, its irrelevant if he's got internal routing or not, sending products in working order straight from the box is more important.
You could offer to bleed the rear for him, but 60 days is way too long to raise issues, I certainly wouldn't bother a seller after 2 months, sound like he got a good deal.
My pet hates, no feedback and ignores messages, sod him.
