This is very encouraging.
The discovery of the first chemical to prevent the death of brain tissue in a neurodegenerative disease has been hailed as an exciting and historic moment in medical research.
Interestingly enough, this is currently at number 7 on the BBC's most read list, "Naked urinating airport man tasered" currently at number 1 🙂
Very hopeful! Sounds fairly simple if there are manageable side effects.

Aye, Mrs PF is sure this is the first step towards 28 Days Later. Seriously 🙂

(zombification process well under way here) 🙂
Interesting stuff. Obviously a limited study in a mouse version of prion disease is still a long, long way from a workable drug in humans.
The trouble is, that the process they are interrupting with the compound, although dysfunctional in prion disease, actually helps the body control normal cell death under normal circumstances, so if you interfere with it in the medium or long term, you run the risk of causing other serious problems - in this case diabetes, kidney disease, zombification etc.
Hopefully they'll somehow manage to come up with a way of balancing these things out.
