If I ask my boss how many jobs there are and he says 2. I then ask him how many people will be made redundent and he says at least 1.
Does that give me a 50/50 chance of having a job at the end of next week?
no. next
What if I ask him how many people will still have a job next week and he says 1.
Does that improve my chances?
This is important as I don't want to increase my chances of being made redundent by simply wording the question wrong. It is at times like this that statistics suddenly seem important.
is this a real life situation you're in?
yep!
🙁
Hey, but what's the worse that could happen. Wife doesn't work so we will probably lose the house, at least one of the cars and maybe a bike but apart from that I am viewing it as an opportunity.
That should read 'worst' not 'worse', sorry. I probably deserve to be sacked for that.
what do you do for a job?
What do you want me to do?
IT Sales/Business Consultancy stuff
hmmmm I can't think of anywhere looking for that sort of thing I'm afraid.
I was made redundant a few years ago. At the time it was hard to take but it turned out to be the best thing (career wise) that has ever happened to me.
Stay positive.
And good luck.
Looking on the bright side, don't you have a nice new suit for job interviews?

Full time BBB Promoter.
ive been told that im a pool of 6 people, who over the next 31 days, will undergo a consultation to see who has to go.
of the pool of 6 people, 6 people have to go.
what are my chances?
Olly
My symapathies but that is classic 😀
The moral - get a job in consultancy !
As the designated "boy girl puzzle" spokesperson I feel I should comment, but I really can't think of anything funny to say to either of you.
Good luck to both of you, I'm sure in the long run this will be more of an opportunity than a setback, even if it doesn't feel that way now.
I get to see our consultation document on Monday. Can't wait.
Gives you some time to come up with suggestions to improve the business...
So if it is 50/50 of me keeping my job and 50/50 of it being an opportunity and 50/50 of things getting better does that result in the combined chances of:
A) It being an opportunity for things to get better while keeping my job = 12.5%
B) It all going horribly wrong 88.5%
Oh well, there's statistics for you. Personally I say 'What could possibly go wrong?*'
*loudly, repeatedly and sounding more and more hysterical
Time to curl off a pre-emptive strike on the bosses desk?
50:50 i say
you do, or you dont.
same applies for winning the lottery
same applies for getting hit by a bus next time you cross the road.
Yay or Nay, keep it simple
is your boss one of the two jobs?
if so, your chances are considerably less than 50/50
Have they put your desk on a conveyor belt?
Good luck.
What's the chance of being hit by a bus on the way to buy a lottery ticket after being made redundent?
