To use as a “compass” ? Igloo needs to be circular, stomp out a rough circle in the snow to compact it down, tie the string to the screwdriver drive that into the ground and mark a radius.
is my guess
This is a great watch if you can find the whole program
@nickc yes pretty much. The screwdriver will be the hub stuck in the ground in the middle of the circle. All the bricks will be cut and angled to it (cord will be a fixed length)
I've only built 1 before, first one on my own... hence the ski poles
Wind blown snow is best, if it’s just come straight down, it’ll be harder
Our neighbours have built a quinze in our garden a couple of weeks ago. Not as nice as an igloo, but still pretty cool.
@newretrotom cheers looks interesting. I usually (well, that one time, at igloo camp) take bricks from inside the igloo, then dig out under the first layer, then have a quarry nearby at the side.
Did you have a housewarming party IGMC
I once built an Ig. I had to pee outside
IGMC
*sigh. Cut your hand open and suddenly it's bad puns.
You've got snow up there then @Howsyourdad1? Still only have about 15cm daaaaan saaaath, but Falum looked pretty good for the skiing at the weekend, if a bit chilly.
Waiting and interested to see how it turns out.
@Willard and @Howsyourdad1, plenty of snow at Romme Alpin in Dalarna at the weekend, though -20°C on Saturday made for cold skiing. Where are you guys?
Only -10 in Stockholm this morning on the cycle to work.
righto, an update. got a fair bit done in my lunch hour

last picture shows the keystone for the next layer, where it get tougher. You chamfer the blocks on top at an angle (using the cord in the middle of the igloo to give the angle) so the blocks slope in towards the top. Going to let it settle tonight, carry on tomorrow hopefully.
@anus yeah we got a metre and a half in a week. utterly dumping all the time. Was actually quite jobbigt have to clear the snow all the bloody time
@ben i'm in Jämtland, Rödön. 45 mins from Åre
yeah we got a metre and a half in a week.
Looks outside....was previously feeling quite smug about our snow levels....realises I'm not even on the same page let alone league.
oh sorry it was @willard not @anus . freudian slip perhaps haha
Errrr, I think the winter is getting to you. Maybe you need to do the usual thing and spend some time in front of a sun lamp! I was going to suggest a trip to Thailand, then I remembered pandemic.
@ben Split between Uppland (just north of Uppsala) and the bright lights of Stockholm, specifically the posh ghetto that is Östermalm.
Impressed you made it to Romme. We saw the shitshow that was E4N on Friday evening and decided to leave a little later than normal. I'm glad we did, E4 was still bad, but not terrible.
Anus is anyexcusetoride nowadays isn't he.
Going back to the thread, any progress on the igloo last night, or is it another blitz over lunch today? Also, we had some more snow in town (arguably "snow"), was all yesterday's work covered?

Good bit of progress at lunch today. 3rd layer added, plus a little of the 4th. You can see the angle of the bricks on the second picture, starting to lean in alot more now for the roof.
