Hi all, Bit of a random one but...

The Mrs' favourite boots have sprung apart at the zip & i've (stupidly) told her i'd get them fixed no problem, but it now appears that it's a right PITA to do without them looking like a dog's arse as obviously they're all sewn together flat then have the sole etc. fixed after that.

So - as you can see the zip is very slightly misaligned at the bottom leading to it splitting when under any pressure, a shoe repair guy I spoke to reckons it could be fixed but would look like an obvious repair - i'm wondering if some kind of shoe wizard could remove the knackered zip & transfer the slider on to a new bit of zip? Is this doable? Anyone know of any shoe wizards in Glasgow?

Cheers!

John

They are cheap boots and it's not worth the cost. Force the teeth to move, realigning them then slide the slider back down as far as you can to re-close the zip then glue the bottom of the zip closed or stitch it closed with some strong thread to prevent the slider from going down far enough to re-expose the weak teeth.

Had thought of that but the zip's been wrestled about with so much it splits apart under any kind of strain now - I reckon the only way to salvage them is to replace the zip completely but that's gonna be a ball ache apparently...

The zip itself looks pretty much unsuitable for a high strain area but it also looks like it was also slightly misaligned from the factory leading to the problem in the first place. Have told her to bin them & get something else (she emailed photos to the manufacturer who agreed it was a defect & refunded her - didn't ask for them back) but she can't find anything else she likes so has decided to make it my life's ambition to get these fixed at any material or emotional cost.

I know a man who could fix that, sadly he's based in Birmingham, bit if you're really stuck I can give you there details. He's a proper shoe wizard and has done some seriously impressive work on a pair of my wife's shoes.

Lunge - fire me the details if you would, this damn boot (not my wife) has become a bit of a saga, all because I initially said it looked piss easy to fix & i'd get it done no problem... it's no longer about the material cost, it's like those old wheels that you end up spending £10 per spoke to fix x 20 trips to the bike shop rather than accept they're crap & leave them in the shed, but you do it anyway because whenever you see them it annoys the hell out of you 🙂

I would just repair that myself, you can see all the stitching, so can just unpick that. Buy a better quality zip and sew it back in by hand using some tough nylon thread in a matching colour. A bit tedious sewing by hand, but less than an hours work.

Footflaps - I had thought about that, however there's a much higher chance that I would make it 10x worse than actually fix it - going to try another place today & see what they reckon but i'll ask if they could do it by hand.

Lunge - got that cheers, hopefully I don't need it but i'll keep them in mind as a last-resort!
