I know it’s a crime against fashion as I’m over forty, but I need a new pair of jeans. My last two pairs have succumbed to the ravages of time in quick succession. Anybody know where I can get a pair of good quality bootcut jeans? Willing to pay up to £80 or so.

I’ve also ruined a bunch of Henley tops that have rubbish cuffs. I always roll sleeves up and the cuffs have now become very baggy as a result. Bloody cheap cuffs that stretch too easily. Any recommendations for hard wearing Henley style tops or T’s?

Sainsbury's do boot cut jeans, £16 a pop, no better or worse than jeans 3 times the price IMO.

Most jeans these days seem to be fashion items rather than hard wearing.

Debenhams jeans is where I tend to get my bootcuts.

I hear they're rather passe, but meh, I wear boots, and I like how stuff doesn't fall into said boots.

Thanks guys. That’s why I wear them too, great when you wear boots, that and everyone looks a **** in skinny jeans. They might think they don’t, but they definitely do. I’ll be the bleeding edge of fashion, so far gone as to be the next big thing. I find most cheap pairs wear out in the pockets and crotch too quickly.

Blouson tan-coloured leather jacket?

More reddish brown with a huge collar. Funk by name and all that 😂

Maybe you should have gone for a medium leg rather than a long leg D'Arcy? 😉

Humble brag, I can barely get standard or skinny jeans over my thighs. Even then my junk is too squashed.

Straight cut works but the ankles are too narrow and look silly.

Same reasoning as me mattyfez. I don’t like having my junk crushed and a full view of foot is just plain wrong

Standard STW jeans thread excuse. 😀

Plenty of places do slim/skinny with a bit of stretch these days for the, erm big waisted thighed.

I can't get anything skinny and a fair amount of standard cut stuff over my *calves*. Apparently a childhood of habitually walking on your toes does that to your calf muscles, does make buying trousers a bit tricky.

None of those will work because the crotch on the jeans will disintegrate and the tops will have shite cuffs that turn baggy like a kung fu villains robes after being worn twice.

How about straight jeans but with no daft taper and a decent sized leg hole?

What’s a Henley top?

It's what 50 year old football wannabe casuals wear with bootcut jeans.

****ing hate football, so that counts me out. It’s a basic grandad type collar T-shirt. Just a plain garment that can be worn with pretty much anything. No idea what nobeer is blathering on about.

Flares are like bootcut but more, well, flared.

Not heard the Henley thing before - they're still called grandad shirts up here.

The only thing about Henley clothing I'm aware of, is that it usually says 'henley' on it in massive letters.

Different thing completely mattyfez. Didn’t know Henley was a brand until this thread. From a quick google it’s Henley’s and might be where the football reference comes from.

Will give Uniqlo a try. Thanks to whoever recommended 👍🏼

Cant you ask your partner to go shopping with you? It sounds like your dressing very dated, no one dresses like that now.

That’s because you’re a fashion victim and therefore have no sense of personal style. Who leaves the house to go shopping? What year are you living in? Finally I dress like this so your statement is false. If I’m dated it just means I’m ahead of current trends and don’t have my tackle crushed 😉

This thread is the sartorial equivalent of the bit in the guitar thread where members have posted pictures of their awful Ibanez and other hair metal guitars. It's not the f***king early 90s people!

Hair metal in the 90’s? Seattle scene was in full swing and hair metal was dead. Think I’ve found some jeans any way. You lot are lovely, but really ****ing weird. Who knew that a man’s choice in jeans leg style could bring out so many repressed fashionistas?

Nope. From experience, Uniqlo japanese selvedge at c.£40 are as good as, if not better than, my Edwin japanese selvedge with a RRP of £160. Seem to be the same weight and they wear pretty much identically. They're not exactly 14-16oz Sugar Canes but they do pretty well for the daily commute.

awful Ibanez and other hair metal guitars.

Says the man who specializes in selling rusty, shodily-repainted 60s guitars for more money than the modern Fender custom shop equivalent. 😉

Jeans that fit me generally have "age 14-15" on the label rather than a size.

I can’t get anything skinny and a fair amount of standard cut stuff over my *calves*.

Pretty much this. Anything normal and "fashionable" just rides up my calves and stays there, if I can even get them on in the first place. I'm stuck with either wide-as-f*** old man Wranglers or bootcut. Neither is a particularly good look. I've found Sainbury's Denim by Tu (I know...) to be a) a very minimal bootcut, and b) slightly stretchy, both of which help me look less like I'm wearing my dad's hand-me-downs.

Aye, better that you stick to dressing like the long lost 3rd Goss triplet.

Didn’t Bros wear ripped up jeans with turn ups? Love how you know how I dress from looking to replace one pair of trousers 😉

So the OP needs a Boot Cut jean (slightly wider at the ankle) to stop his "Junk" getting squashed..... That's beyond a humble brag.....

Oh, a Henley top is basically a granddad shirt then...

I thought maybe it was one of those dreadful items of clothing with massive numbers on it, pretending to be made out of old sails.

Occasionally they'd restrict movement by getting caught on e.g. a doorhandle.

Still, no fitting problems for the STW massive calves and thighs condition sufferers.

Used to be a sprinter when I was younger and 30 years of MTB on top of that means that loose fitting jeans are my only option. Only item I’ve ever bought from Next as they are the only shop selling any jeans that aren’t skinny or straight fit.

Would love a pair of nice quality jeans but none of them fit me. 🙁

I thought with this being generally middleclasslogburnercoffeetrackworld that Henley would make more sense. Should’ve said grandad collar really.

First bit, yes. You appear to be one of the few that understands what a modern bootcut jean is! Second bit, I tried on some slim jeans and they just felt restrictive. Skinny jeans I won’t even entertain as boots just look wrong with them. Also just plain don’t like them.

I’m built like a racing snake and I’m not that well endowed unfortunately. I do enjoy being able to walk and bend when wearing jeans though and to be able to use the pockets.

I nearly always wear boots, Meindle Desert Fox army boots in spring summer and autumn, German ex-Paratrooper boots in winter, and if I wear jeans they’re almost always Uniqlo regular cut Japanese selvedge, I’ll have no truck with boot-cut or anything that’s even remotely flared - been there, done that, up until the mid-70’s, and I went back to 501’s which I started wearing after I left school. Uniqlo regular cut are the nearest I’ve found to 501’s, but a lot cheaper, and selvedge, which Levi’s stopped doing I think in the early 70’s, and sold all the looms to Japan!

Gap do an Athletic Fit that's good for the discerning cyclist. Slight stretchy and a bit more room in the leg and calf, I've got a couple of pairs and they go great with boots.

Go to a Levi store and try some on. they have a range of styles that surely one will work. Even have bootcut iirc. I buy them as they fit better and last longer than cheaper jeans. No need to pay more. I wear them for work and the dark colours look smart.

I'm never quite sure when people on here start a thread asking for sartorial advice, whether, a) they're in fact just starting a comedy thread for shits an' giggles to amuse themselves or b) they do in fact struggle with the whole "being an adult" concept that they actually need advice from strangers on how to dress. This is then further muddied by people actually offering advice that a) makes you sound like the OPs mother, or b) reveals your own clothes choices to be "a bit odd" (see "German terrorist of the 70's" look being promoted by CZ up there...)

I went back to Levi jeans - just because they fitted and weren't all chicken leg / Max Wall styles.

Prana do some nice jeans but, basically, I'm too damn fat for them.

I pretty much only buy jeans from Next now as they are a bit stretchy!! Straight cut seems to work for my massive thighs and calves and I find jeans with a button fly generally have more ball room...

I love grandad tops, and I’m always on the lookout for them. American Apparel used to do the best, but mine have just about worn out now.

Gap sometimes do good ones, but they’re too expensive. It’s always worth having a look in the sale when they are sometimes almost giving them away.
I got a great shirt from Levi’s this year, but they seem to have stopped selling it. Maybe worth keeping an eye on them though.
Superdry had some good shirts earlier this year, but they were mostly ruined by all the branding. I got a well made short sleeve grandad top from their - if they cut down on the logos next year I’ll buy more.
Uniqlo sometimes sell them. Like most Uniqlo stuff it’s well made and not overpriced.

Boot-cut jeans though? That’ll be a no.

No footflaps it definitely wasn’t 😂 I’d never ask for advice on how to dress from the people on here. Where to buy quality stuff I already want is a different matter. This thread has been a laugh though and has some people who are angered by the thought of somebody wearing jeans that don’t strictly follow the latest fashion.

Even contained some actual real life suggestions too!

The important thing to understand is that you're all of an age where the only person who cares what you wear is you. No-one, literally no-one else cares at all, you're an aging chap; wear whatever you want.

It's quite liberating when you understand it.

Have a look at Uniqlo for jeans.

Last time I bought a pair of boot cut jeans I ended up buying womens size10 regular. Dorothy Perkins £20. They fit perfectly the only problem is the pockets are really shallow. Bit pished off I wasn't a size 8 tbh! :'-)
