I need to pick up a wireless signal from the hallway (phone socket is here) and take it upstairs to the study, where I have a desktop PC. I'd like to then plug the PC in with an ethernet cable, I've tried a number of wireless cards in the PC and they've all been sketchy, so would like to avoid this.

Do I just need a wireless repeater? Do they generally have an ethernet socket on them for a wired connection?

Thanks

CB

Back to the reasons..

Are you planning to network more things upstairs in a wired way?
If not whats wrong with Wifi?

Start with the problem and see what the solution is

Okey dokes.

Phone socket and hence wireless router is in the hall. There are no other telephone extensions. I use a laptop (connected to the router via wireless) 90% of the time, but it would be nice to connect an old desktop I have to the internet. The study is upstairs. I tried 2 different wireless cards in the computer, and got it connected, but they were both a bit erratic and temperamental (this could be the pc's fault, but I'm not going down that route) The PC works faultlessly when connected via ethernet.

Edit: the PC would be the only thing connected.

I wanted to establish a wireless connection to th study, and plug the PC in via ethernet cable.

Get a phone extension and move the router?

Do you get a strong signal on the WiFi card or not?
The other idea might be to try and get the aerial for the card out of the back of the PC simply using a USB WiFi stick on a cable might work simply & cheaply. After that your into the world of powerline etc or a long network cable.

signal was ok on the wireless cards, but the interfaces wouldn't load sometimes, and often you'd have to reboot for it to find the card and or signal again. A right PITA in short.

I did consider Powerline ethernet, but the PC is powered by a multiplug as there's only one socket in the study. As I understand it, when not plugged directly into the wall this doesn't work?
