Evening all.

My brother came home from a weekend away to find a leaky boiler.

They have been doing quite a lot of work on the house including replacing radiators and have a small leak somewhere that they are struggling to find so found the more major boiler leak when intending to top up pressure in radiators.

The boiler is a Vaillant ecotech plus 831 and it is said to be about twelve years old. A plumber has come out to look at it and suggests it is either the pump (£400 to replace) or water condensate (£400 to replace).

There is still more work to do on the house including more replacement radiators.

They are now considering whether to repair or replace the boiler.

Interested in anyones comment/experience/thoughts including on the costs stated above which I guess include fitting. It is in Leeds area if that affects quoted prices.

I'm not certain but that might be the boiler that has a rubber pipe in the case that is known to leak, it also might have the condense pipe that melts as it touches something in the case.

Could be were the leaks are coming from.

Saying that if he is doing all that work on the house then it may be an idea to think about replacement.

And £400 to change the pump sounds steep to me. Can't remember how much I paid for one but thought it was £150 ish for the pump.

Thank you for that advice. £400 is the fitted price he has been quoted. I checked the pump price and that was £150 so I guess allowing 2-3hr labour to diagnose and fit it is probably about right.

Interesting ideas about where the leak is coming from though, thank you.

I swapped ours out the other week, £87 from Tool Station. £317 is a hell of a lot of labour for a 1-2 hour job (assuming draining the system).

I don’t think the pump specific to that boiler is available from toolstation and certainly not at that price.

I'd put a bit more effort into finding the leak. Mine was just an o-ring that had got a bit old and hard. It was a couple of quid from the local vaillant dealer (expensive for an o-ring but cheap in the scheme of things and they are only round the corner). IMO its generally better to keep an old boiler running. Better financially and better for the environment, up to a point obviously.
