So why is it that a boiler works for ages no bother

Gets cold and the whole system shits it's self.

Found a leaky compression joint where the pipework goes from downstairs to up - 1 of only 2 compression .Joints in the system- upstairs is soldered and downstairs is John guest. Speed fit It's just the joints between that are compression --which have not leaked in the 6years since it was installed...but this year it's decided to leak

But that would be too simple it still losing pressure ....boilers currently isolated from electric and heating circuit and  2bar applied just to check it's not internal and ergo needs an engineer to visit.

Hot to cold difference it greater slowing enough size change to kill a old compression joint.

Well annoyingly boiler held pressure when isolated.  -nothing under the floor is even remotely wet.....

None of my celings have wet patches.....

Measured earlier 1 bar pressure drop from the system  is circa 3 litres......you'd think I'd notice that surely .

I would check that your expansion chamber bladder hasn't split. That would make the system much more sensitive to expansion, and a big pressure drop could occur without much loss of water. I am not a plumber.

turns out that after much head scratching it developed into more of an issue.

came into house on monday night and could smell the fernox sweet smell in the utility room.

pulled the washing machine out and lifted the hatch over the only 2 joints under the utility - the two copper tails out the boiler. The push fit connector locking neck had come loose some how and it was pretty much a running tap.

nipped that up with a plumbers spanner and no more issue.

its been there fine for 6+ years till this year it seems.
