Is changing a boiler like buying a diesel car? ie something else around the corner. Are there any viable alternatives?

I'm pretty sure they'll be a few more years to be had in gas yet

You only get steam and CO2 out of the spout.

I guess long term is will all be electric heating from renewable sources unless mankind wipes itself out beforehand. My money is on the latter.....

Assuming you currently have a conventional read system, an Air Source Heatpump is about the only thing even worse considering for retrofitting at the moment, and it’s far from ideal as they are better running underfloor heating systems so will be somewhat costly to run, but not as bad as a pure electric heating system. Gshp is a non starter for most as too expensive to install retrofit or not. With the currently available technology it’s quite reasonable to update to the latest gas condensing boiler IMO.
