I have an AV receiver that turns on with the telly and works just fine

... but I also have a SW that doesn't do auto-on and I'd much rather that it did (don't want to replace it though).  I can get young Alexa to switch it on but auto would be nicer

In my mind there's a smart plug of some sort that could be controlled by AEC/CEC/HDMI/whatever

Does such a wonder-product actually exist ?? (for under a fiver, obvz)

If you can't find such a thing, you could look to Alexa controlled mains switches and link them into a group. We do this for the lighting and it works well.

Some relatively cheap switches are £20 or so for 3 and will work with the smart life app in groups if you don't use Alexa, or with a skill if you do.

We have smart plugs for this. There are many options. If you don't use Alexa or similar there may be a way to automate it from the telly or its remote, not sure.

Meh, alexa all the way.

Our soundbar, blu Ray and sub all come on when I say "turn on film" and is off when just watching TV to save the baby robins. You could always set a timer routine to turn on 7pm and off at 1am Fri,Sat & Sun (or whenever you usually watch films) to 'automate' it..

Intelliplug
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/oneclick-intelliplug-intelligent-mains-adapter-up-001-on.html?template=amp

Amp goes in the main socket. run a cable to the sub from one of the peripheral sockets. Have been using one for years.

Intelliplug

Oooooh, that might be a goer !
(I assume it'll switch back off when the amp goes into standby - otherwise pointless, right ?)

Thanks all

Hopefully the amp draws enough load to trigger the intelliplug. I’ll see if I can find the specs…
And hopefully the peripheral socket can handle the subwoofer load.

Looks like they made a version specifically for tv/av, but struggling to find details, looks like the original manufacturer went bust or disappeared into china. Couple of old ones on eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-TVA106-Remote-Powerdown-Energy-Saver-TV-DVD-SKY-XBOX-OneClick-EON-/373592993280?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

I was hoping to find a solution for you that utilised the 12v trigger. Most av amps have a 12v trigger output. I figured there must be a product out there that uses that output to enable a socket. But I can’t find one with a quick google, some mention of a product on an old forum but can’t find one on sale.

I set this up for a mates system using a 12v/240v relay, similar to the one below in the link.

This one?

I use one for turning on/off peripherals on a PC but when I tried to use one to turn on a subwoofer when an amp was turned on the amp didn't use enough current to trigger it. If you always want the sub on with the TV then triggering it from the TV should work ok although there may be some pops and bangs if the order of things coming on is sub-optimal (no pun intended).

I couldn't be bothered to make one so bought one of these a few years ago, works perfectly..

I have some vague memory about fiddling with it to get it to detect the right on vs standby levels when I first got it, but it’s worked ever since.

how much power does a sub actually use whilst on but no signal? is the cost of a plug widget worth it?

@b33k34 - that intelliplug suggestion was a great one, thanks.  Works a treat

(they seem to have discontinued the product though, so I guess i was lucky, timing-wise)

Anyone know if the e-On branded plugs are the same thing?

Probably not, but I’d rather not have the amp on constantly.

Yes. Pretty sure mine is eon branded.
