While the ship will not be named Boaty McBoatface, one of the remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the vote.
James Hand, who first suggested the name Boaty McBoatace, said he was pleased the name would "live on".
In a tweet, he also said that RRS Sir David Attenborough was a "fitting and excellent choice".

Would have been better if they hadn't listened to their daft social media team and just named it that in the first place.

What a shame, however, the name has entered the public lexicon now, there'll be no escaping it.

It would be funny if Sir Dave changed his name to Sir Boaty McBoatface now. 🙂

I'm sure someone will bring out a Chrome extension that does it for him.

Meanwhile, members of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee have said they want to discuss whether the public engagement project around the search for a name has been a success or a failure.

Nicola Blackwood, committee chair, questioned whether the process had been a "triumph of public engagement or a PR disaster".

That's a bit sad

Think the RSS Sir David Attenborough is a pretty good name for a scientific vessel. Boaty McBoatface was brilliant and at least thet're acknowledging it a bit

I think they've handled it perfectly. They've named the ship a "proper" name, and named it after someone who is almost universally seen in a positive light. They've then acknowledged the vote and named a related vessel Boaty, this is a great outcome.

Brilliant bit of PR. To get that many people bothering to name a research vessel and learn a tiny bit about what it does in fantastic. The chosen name (RRS Sir David Attenborough) is good and I love the bit about naming one of the remote subs Boaty shows that they understand.

I agree with [b]spawnofyorkshire[/b] it's a bit sad that they have to discuss whether it has been a PR success or a failure. Shouldn't even need to be discussed. 100% success, how many of us would really have known anything about this boat and its work without this competition and Boaty McBoatface being suggested?

Same as no one will really be upset that they didn't choose Boaty McBoatface as the name.
