Always fancied the tin top version, but they are getting a bit long in the tooth. The newer model is becoming a bit more affordable so maybe going to scratch an itch this summer. Get rid of the Discovery now I've got a 5 seat pick-up again and have one of these for a year.

M40i - 3l straight 6, circa 340bhp, RWD, 4.5s 0-60.

Anyone had one? And no, I'm not a hairdresser and no, I wouldn't rather have a Boxster 😉

There's an MX5 at one of the houses at Parsley Hay which has a sticker saying "No hairdressing products left in vehicle overnight". You could get one to avoid future confusion?

I had 3 of the originals, a 3.0se, a 3.0si coupe and an M-Coupe.

The M was the only one which really rode properly, but had a rubbish gearbox for 1-2.  The rest was fine.  Sounded amazing, fast and lairy, tail out even when it was slightly damp.  I did look at buying the new (one before what you’re looking at but similar) 35si when I came out of the M, but it was no sports cars.  It was heavy and leaden and, well turbo’d and it was just a little lacking.

That said, they still cosset nicely, sound good and are easy to drive fast, but don’t expect a rewarding drive.

…unless this one is better.

Mrs has got an M40i. She's not a hairdresser. I love it, but I'm no petrol head. The manual seems to be the one to have but sadly her ladyship wanted the auto.

Jeez I'd feel stupid sitting in that, even in the passenger seat. In fact I'd rather walk, no matter what the distance. Just being honest. What better way of telling everyone you don't care about the climate, don't care about the health of the people you drive past, don't intend to drive sensibly (otherwise what's the point?), want to create noise so people look at you and so they suffer more than necessary from noise pollution. They'll also assume you have money to burn and I'll assume you have more money than sense or taste. 🤠 🤠 🤠 🤠 🤠

No I'm not jealous, I could buy one, but quite apart from being horrible it would ruin my sex life, Madame Edukator would assume I had a mistress/had lost my mind/needed tablets of a similar colour. 🤧 🤧 🤧 🤧 🤧 🤧 🤧 🤧

If you don't like the above bear in mind that you're on a bike forum where the EV thread is pretty well supported. 😇 😇 😇 😇 😇 😇

I'll probably get acused of trolling, not true, It's my honest opinion I'd quite happy say it to your face, with a smile so I'll add a few.

Just don't, it's awful, it sums up many of the ills of society in one pointy, noisy, smelly, showy, willy substituting lump. 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 Wait4me's ladyship can ignore the last point.

If you don't like my post Mods, what about the one above bragging about getting sideways on slightly damp roads (as opposed to a race track or special stage) ? 👎 👎 👎 👎 👎 This is 2025

I normally ignore them, Bruce, but this one is his best choice yet, I couldn't resist the bait. Well done OP with the user name too long to type.

If your other car is a Lambo, fair enough you're not sure. In my case, my "other" car is a Renault Scenic, and that BMW looks f*****g fantastic. Do better cars exist? Probably, but who cares? Get one.

There's a purple one of these near me. If you've not bought that, I'd suggest a purple one.

I tried a 135i and was put off by it sticking it's tail out under minimal provocation in the bone dry. Fun, but didn't seem a relaxing drive.

Don’t put words in my mouth.  I stated as fact that it would side slip in even dampest of conditions - I didn’t say where or when this happened and at no point did I brag.  And this was 2009, not 2025, so “edukator” take your superiority and shove it.

Blimey, what a funny old world we live in 😂

In my opinion that blue is the worst colour in the limited colour choices the earlier ones came in. Mrs had a red one and I thought that was awesome looking. She just chopped that in (lease deal obviously) for one in portimao blue and that is growing on me. Personally I think they look great in black and seem pretty rare.

It looks fantastic in blue, and TF it's not black. Yellow would be betterer, but anything but black/white/red.

You can pick up a good 3.0i for the deposit needed to put down for the blue one or a very good one if you add on 3 months to BMW or LEX etc

You, Daffy

Sounded amazing, fast and lairy, tail out even when it was slightly damp

I really haven't put words in your mouth. Most people would regard "tail out" as synonymous with "sideways" and "slightly damp" and "slightly damp roads" seems pretty good unless you meant the car was damp.

But all this is really sad. The OP opened with a provocative car thread on a bike forum full of lefty cyclist eco types (as Bruce noted not for the first time). The OP's choice of car sufficiently clichéd to be good fun trolling of a bike forum, I have no problem with that OP. I posted in good humour with plenty of smiles and someone gets angry and unpleasant.

There was no intent to offend, mildly tease in good humour yes, but not offend.

I'm out of this thread and wish you all well whatever your choice of car.

Drive safely and "think bike".

I drove an older z4 in the Isle of Man. The ride was horrible until you got over 100mph

Just didn’t have much character

The newer Z4 is huge and bit of a cruiser.

If you want character get a 981 Porsche Boxster.

If you want a fun car buy a Caterham

@Edukator

I for one appreciate your input to the thread

Of course I expected some backlash. Congrats for making it such an epic rant 😘

Not so sure this will really contribute much to killing the planet, the miles I'll do in it would otherwise be in a diesel tbh. If not one of these it'll be an RS6 or an M5 anyway

As for the colour, I actually really didn't like the blue, but the more I see it...

Thanks to STW, I have finally seen the error of my ways and have abandoned my oversized planet destroying , too high up, headlights like the sun , SUV company car and changed to a more acceptable Estate car…………

That estate car being the new BMW G99 M5 Touring 4.4 litre V8 727 bhp in Pepperami Green ( it’s a bit of an animal) .

oh and it’s a plug in hybrid , and only attracts 8% BIK ( just for the haters )

Lol at the rant - not quite sure how this thread would be provocative - it’s just a car question.

I don’t mind the look of that BMW above and that engine is meant to be very decent - I think my next car will be either the M340i touring or a 540i touring which also have a version of the B58 in them.

Clearly it’s not an out and out sports car like maybe a Boxster - but equally it’s not going to handle like a pudding either. I’ve driven the Z3 / Z4 mk1 / Z4 with the tin top and none have been breathtaking in terms of sports car, but they were always quite pleasant. The Honda S2000 I had when I drove both the Z3 and Z4 was a lot more exciting - but equally had the chance it might try to throw you through a hedge backwards if you weren’t careful (think the rear suspension was too soft so it could lurch then snap).

My next door neighbour is a petrol head and had the previous model albeit with the smaller engine. Didn't like it, too civilised, too smooth, too quiet. For reference he sold a Lotus 7 style kit car to get it and has an Alfa 155 GTA in the garage.

Well, had a (nice safe and courteous) overtake from one on this mornings club ride, and it sounded lovely and looked very nice with the top down in the sunshine.

I like the look of them, they look fun. And it looks good in that blue colour.

The reviews at the time did say they were more grand tourer than sports car, but if you're happy with that, then go for it.

Shame they no longer do it as a folding hard top, as that looks a bit impractical for bikes.

Need my car to be my only car so a bit more luggage capacity would be appreciated.

So i’d love the handling*, love the nice interior, love the low seating position. Would look back at it every time I walk away.

Extra (barely usable) power and ‘look at me’ noise don’t really light my fire though.

*grand tourer rather than sports car handling if true is more than enough for me

To balance out Edukators input, I’m a fully paid up member of the “EVs are future and just plain better” brigade, have been in an EV for over 3 years and and would not go back, but do quite fancy one of these or so something similar as a second car for a bit of fun every now and again.

as that looks a bit impractical

Not necessarily true as I can attest. The one time I've only needed rescuing on the bike my wife collected me in the Z. "Don't forget some bungee cords" I cried. We had the frame dangling precariously out of the bungeed down boot and I just squeezed into the passenger seat with two very muddy gravel bike wheels.

So yes, totally impractical.

All electric MG Cyberstar!? Bit spendy though...

https://www.mgcyberster.co.uk/

Personally I'd get a very nice Honda S2000 for around £16k and you have a great two seater sportscar - and a appreciating asset in the garage.

Ignoring the OP's request which is the way of doing things around here...

Considered a Jaguar F-Type?

Options with more cylinders, coupe and soft top and not ageing too badly I think.

Indeed that is a bit odd. my name is indeed Mark. With the exception of  Tuesdays, but that's probably for a different  thread.

As to the suggestion of a cyberster for my idea of a second "toy" car - not a chance.. The idea is almost the opposite of an EV - something noisy, mechanical and probably a bit smelly.

Mate at work has one. He had to have the engine dropped so they could mill out one of the injectors. Cost 6k. Then it got rear ended. They sound lovely but they're big, heavy cars, despite a lot of the panels being ally and as a result repairs are pricey. Fine as a tourer.

Same with a mates partner's F Type. Serious money to fix the injectors.
Not sure I even like them TBH.
